My First Encounter: NCSC National Children Science Congress

It was during my college days that I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Kalam. This experience was particularly significant when my team and I were selected for the NCSC National Children Science Congress in 2012, held in Barabanki near Lucknow. As the chief guest in the inauguration, he delivered an inspirational speech that resonated deeply with all of us.

He began his address by quoting, To achieve your target, you need excellence in your thinking and actions. This statement quickly became a guiding principle for us. He then shared a powerful personal story about his own failures:

When I was in the process of joining the Indian Air Force, I had two chances to join the AFSB Dehradun and the Directorate of Technical Development and Production (DTDP) Delhi. After the interview, I realized that only certain kinds of candidates—those with a specific smartness, apart from their knowledge and qualifications—were selected. I placed 9th out of 25 candidates and was not chosen. There were only 8 vacancies.

Despite the disappointment, Dr. Kalam refused to give up. He emphasized the importance of resilience and perseverance, and he advised us to never compromise on one's goals, even after facing setbacks. He quoted:

If you like to shine like the sun, first burn like it.

These words left a lasting impact on me and the other students present. They serve as a reminder that failure is not the end but rather an opportunity to learn and grow stronger.
