A Comprehensive Review of Future Institute of Engineering and Management (IEM) in Kolkata
As a current student at Future Institute of Engineering and Management (IEM) in Kolkata, this review is based on my firsthand experience, not just rankings and online feedback. IEM holds a high position among engineering institutes in West Bengal, ranking with the likes of IIT KGP, NIT Durgapur, JU Shibpur, and IIEST. While rankings are important, IEM’s unique culture and structure stand out, shaping more than just academic success.
Discipline and Work Ethic
IEM is very strict. While this can feel overwhelming at first, it is essential for your future in the corporate world. Discipline, punctuality, and a strong work ethic are crucial in any profession. My father, a corporate employee, often commends IEM's focus on discipline, which has fixed my sleep schedule and made me more productive and energetic.
Our strict schedule includes waking up early, maintaining a 75% attendance, and not bunking classes. This might seem like a challenge, but it prepares us for the demands of the real world.
Academics and Research
IEM is an extremely academic and research-oriented college. We cover a wide range of subjects, including Design Thinking and Entrepreneurship, which align with industry demands. We also work on at least 3-4 projects per semester, which foster practical learning. This approach ensures we do not just focus on rote learning.
My professors are dedicated to ensuring we understand the material. They are available for guidance, prepare detailed study materials, and provide video lectures when necessary.
Support Systems and Resources
Each section has two mentors who are always willing to help. There is also an Anti-Ragging Committee to keep the campus free from bullying. I have not heard of any cases of ragging during my time at IEM.
Our laboratory classes are among the best. The faculty ensures we learn the theory behind the experiments, not just read them. Regular viva sessions and strict invigilation make sure we understand the material thoroughly.
Opportunities and Success Stories
IEM offers numerous opportunities through its societies, clubs, the Institutional Innovation Cell, workshops, and alumni interactions. The innovation network is particularly strong, with many seniors running successful startups.
The college has its own Cloud Computing Lab and provides free access to courses on platforms like LinkedIn Learning and Coursera. These resources can significantly enhance your skills and career prospects.
Challenges and Growth
Like any institution, IEM has its flaws, but they are opportunities for growth. Regular feedback from students is listened to, and improvements are made.
Our founder, a man of vision, built this institute with limited resources 35 years ago. While it does not have a massive campus, the facilities, including canteens, playgrounds, research labs, 24/7 libraries, and a strong alumni network, are exceptional.
Ultimately, IEM prepares you for the real world. When you study engineering, your college becomes your home. While there are challenges, it is essential to focus on the positives and the invaluable experiences and friendships that come with attending IEM.
