A Memorable Experience: My Time at the University of Latvia Through the IPM IIM Indore Student Exchange Programme

During my third year at IPM IIM Indore, I embarked on an enriching journey as part of the collaborative student exchange programme. I had the unique opportunity to study at the University of Latvia, where I not only excelled academically but also forged lasting friendships and engaged in a series of exciting adventures. This article delves into my experiences, expenses, and the overall impact of my time abroad.

The Journey Begins

My adventure began in Riga, Latvia, in January, where the local climate greeted me with a harsh winter. From the moment I stepped out of the international airport, I was enveloped in a world of cold and excitement. The city, known for its cosmopolitan vibe and rich history, was a perfect blend of tradition and innovation, making it an ideal place for academic exploration and personal growth.

Academic Pursuits

At the University of Latvia, I was fortunate to take courses that aligned with my interests and provided me with valuable insights into international law and culture. The coursework was less rigorous compared to my studies back at IIM Indore, allowing me to focus more on experiential learning and personal development. The flexibility to choose courses and the absence of stringent attendance norms made the academic environment both engaging and manageable.

Cultural Immersion and Friendship

One of the most rewarding aspects of my experience was the opportunity to connect with students from diverse backgrounds. During my stay, I had the pleasure of meeting Pradeep Charan, a fellow exchange student. Our shared journey and common interests helped us form a strong bond, which extended beyond our time in Latvia. This international experience not only broadened my horizons but also provided a wealth of memorable companionship.

Travel and Exploration

As a student with a Type-D visa, I was able to travel extensively within the Schengen zone, visiting numerous European countries and immersing myself in their unique cultures and economies. From the snow-covered landscapes of Latvia to the bustling streets of the Netherlands, each destination offered a new perspective and a chance to explore different ways of life. These travels allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the diverse economies and societies that make up Europe.

Living and Budgeting

Living expenses in Latvia, while relatively moderate, could quickly add up without careful management. To ensure I could afford to explore, I chose to cook for myself, which allowed me to save money and also indulge in more homemade meals. Despite the college canteens offering European food, the blandness of the food and the high cost made it challenging to rely on the cafeteria consistently. As a result, I learned to master my cooking skills and appreciate the value of every meal.

Support and Funding

One of the highlights of my experience was receiving the ERASMUS grant, which covered a significant portion of my expenses, thus easing the financial burden. This grant, coupled with my ability to cook and manage my finances, allowed me to fully embrace the experience without the fear of missing out on key moments due to budget constraints.

Conclusion

My time at the University of Latvia through the IPM IIM Indore student exchange programme was an unforgettable experience. From the cold winters of Latvia to the vibrant cultures of Europe, this journey offered me invaluable academic and personal growth. I highly recommend this programme to anyone seeking to broaden their horizons, forging new friendships, and exploring the world from a unique perspective.
