Assessing Leadership Skills: A Reflection
Leadership, much like any other profession, is a continually evolving craft. The way teams are managed, the goals set, and the strategies implemented have all changed over time. In this reflection, I will evaluate my own leadership skills and why I chose a particular rating.
External Evaluation
Recently, a consulting firm provided an in-depth analysis of my leadership capabilities. According to them, I am a very good leader, and their assessment is backed by a compelling business case. The consultant noted that I successfully motivated my team to increase productivity by over 300%. While the business case is in Spanish, if anyone is interested, I can share it via email upon request
Self-Assessment: A Promising 7.625
While external validation is important, I believe it is equally crucial to conduct a self-assessment. I rate myself a promising 7.625 as a leader. Here’s why:
Firstly, it is essential to acknowledge areas of improvement. In my opinion, leaders are always in a state of learning. As times change, so too must our approaches. The workforce of today is vastly different from what it was a few decades ago. Indigo, a generation schooled in empowerment and self-expression, expects managers to be empathetic and to foster an inclusive workplace. Traditional hierarchies and the expectation of blind obedience are no longer well-received. Leaders must now balance authority with empathy, ensuring that every team member feels heard and valued.
Why Choose a 7.625?
The rating of 7.625 reflects my belief that there is always room for improvement. Here are some of the core aspects that contribute to this assessment:
Promising but not perfect: While I have noticed significant improvements in team motivation and productivity, there is still a long way to go in terms of fostering an inclusive environment. Learning and Growth: I am always seeking new ways to enhance my leadership skills. This is a continuous process, constantly adapting to new challenges and strategies. Empathy and Inclusion: I recognize that empathy plays a vital role in leadership. While I have made strides in this area, I am committed to continued improvement to become a more inclusive leader. Conclusion
In conclusion, while I am proud of my achievements, I understand that true leadership is an ongoing journey. I will continue to seek ways to improve and evolve, ensuring that I remain a leader who is both effective and inclusive.
