Why is BBC Famous in India Recently?
A2A. There was a time when the reach of BBC was limited to the English-speaking elite class in India. Observers could note that BBC had a distinct way of presenting news and stories of investigative journalism, very different from the Indian media. It wasn’t widely famous among the masses, but the picture changed after BBC launched news in regional languages, gaining a significant following.
Shift in Popularity
BBC news in Gujarati and Punjabi has a sizable base, bridging the gap between the elite and the masses. I, personally, follow BBC news very rarely and have always leaned against its condescending approach towards matters related to India. However, BBC’s trustworthy and realistic accounts during natural calamities, disasters, riots, and wars have earned it quite a few followers. Additionally, its superior coverage of international news sets it apart from local media channels.
The Turning Point: Documentaries and IT Raid
The recent events involving the documentary and subsequent IT raid became significant turning points in BBC’s presence in India. While I understood the pulling down of the video, the IT raid was absolutely unnecessary. It only piqued curiosity and potentially drove more people to watch BBC programs. A large section of BBC supporters will likely be drawn to watch BBC’s content, now out of curiosity and controversy. This increased attention might help BBC grow its audience significantly.
Future of BBC in India
It remains to be seen whether BBC India will remain true to its heritage or become 'Godi Media' (Jandarma Gujarati). If BBC can navigate this controversy with tact and integrity, it might solidify its position in the Indian market. Conversely, if it mishandles the situation, it could risk alienating its loyal audience.
As I have opined, BBC’s journey in India is a testament to the changing media landscape and the role of curiosity in shaping public perception. The future is now in BBC's hands, as it navigates the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
