BITSAT 2017 Experience: Tips and Insights

As a former BITS Admission Test (BITSAT) participant, I can now share a detailed account of my 2017 experience on May 20th and 21st. My journey to the test is marked by preparation, strategy, and a few unexpected twists.

My Preparation Journey

From the previous 10 CGPA in my 10th board exams in CBSE, to 2 years of rigorous coaching at Kota, and my decent marks in JEE Main, my preparation was both intense and extensive. To give you a clearer picture, from April 2nd to May 22nd, I opened my books around 10 times. My optimistic yet realistic approach helped me strategize for the exam.

Exam Strategy and Overview

Here is the breakdown of my strategy for the different sections of the BITSAT 2017 exam:

English and Logical Reasoning (ENG L. G.)

I started with English, aiming to score above 100. Given that I already had an average knowledge of English, I felt confident in attempting all questions. Logical Reasoning was equally straightforward, so I also aimed to score well in this section.

Chemistry

Chemistry was my strongest subject, and I tackled it first. I encountered around 15-18 factual questions. Most were from inorganic chemistry, with about 6-7 from physical, 4-5 from organic, and 3 from polymer structures like Teflon and vulcanization of rubber. The questions were mostly easy and could be answered fairly well if you studied well.

Physics

Physics posed a challenge, particularly due to the high weightage given to mechanics. Questions included 5-6 on magnetism and a couple from the laws of thermodynamics. Work calculation from a P-V graph was also included, and there were some questions on electronics and optics. Despite the tricky nature, reviewing options before solving each question helped a lot.

Mathematics

Mathematics, my weakest yet toughest section, mainly consisted of boring calculus, conic sections, and a few vector and 3D geometry questions. Mastery of sequence and series and circles, along with basic algebra, would ensure a decent score.

Exam Day Experience

The exam day itself was a mix of confidence and nervousness. I solved the paper within two hours and attempted 104 questions, feeling that a score of 250 would secure me a place. However, given the requirement of at least 300 marks, I decided to attempt all questions, hoping for a lucky break. Unfortunately, my luck did not hold up, leading to a less than ideal outcome. Nonetheless, the paper was generally easy and scoring if one had a clear understanding of the subject matter.

Advice for Future Applicants

To future BITSAT aspirants, I recommend the following tips:

Revise key topics such as inorganic chemistry, conic sections in mathematics, and general mechanics in physics. Master formulas in physics and ensure you understand the basic concepts in each subject. Stay calm during the exam and avoid last-minute panic to ensure a smooth test-taking experience.

Remember, understanding is key to success in the BITSAT. With the right preparation and mindset, you too can perform well and secure a spot at BITS.

Best of luck, future candidates!
