Career Prospects After Diplomas in Photography: Insights from a Long-Term Professional

Photography is a highly sought-after skill that opens up a multitude of career opportunities. Whether you are a recent graduate or a seasoned professional, the skills you learn through a photography diploma can play a significant role in shaping your career path. In this article, we explore the career prospects after obtaining a diploma in photography, drawing insights from the experiences of someone who has dedicated decades to the craft.

The Reality of a Photographer's Life

As a former editorial and advertising photographer, working between the 1980s to 2017, I have a unique perspective on the day-to-day demands of photography. While the joy of capturing and creating visually stunning moments is undeniable, the behind-the-scenes work is crucial. The vast majority (85%) of my time was spent on business-related tasks such as accounting, billing, marketing, and tax preparation. This underscores the importance of understanding business principles and skills for photographers.

A business degree can be incredibly beneficial. It teaches you to comprehend the value of your work, which is essential for marketing yourself effectively. Moreover, a business degree can help you determine the profitability of your business and set it up for success. Without such knowledge, you may face significant challenges, especially in a fast-paced and competitive industry.

Emphasizing Business Skills Over Academia

While some individuals may pursue an academic qualification like a Master of Photography, the reality is that not all customers appreciate such degrees. Back in the 1990s, I earned a Master of Photography degree from the Professional Photographers of America. Unfortunately, this degree did not significantly impact my business or client relationships. Customers care more about price, quality, and personality than academic credentials.

It is important to consider the cost versus the benefit of pursuing a degree. Paying a photography school a substantial sum for a degree is often a waste of money and can result in increased debt. Instead, use your capital towards building a strong portfolio and developing your skills. A good portfolio can set you apart from other candidates and demonstrate your capabilities to potential clients.

The Value of a Photography Diploma

A diploma in photography from a reputable institution like the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) can be a valuable asset, especially if you are talented. Such a degree can provide a broad knowledge of different types of photography, which can be highly beneficial. However, it is crucial to be aware that some instructors may not be up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies. Therefore, it is essential to choose an institution with current and knowledgeable faculty.

While I did not have a problem finding work or being laid off during my 40-year career, certain required courses were not particularly useful. For instance, I took a quarter of South American Political History in one of my courses, which seemed unnecessary and outdated. Similarly, foreign instructors sometimes overlooked the differences in cultural norms and may have viewed American students with skepticism.

Despite these challenges, my RIT diploma and portfolio helped me stand out. The studies provided me with valuable problem-solving and adaptability skills. When digital photography came into the mainstream, I was able to quickly pick up new techniques and technologies, which gave me an edge over those with less training. Moreover, my degree and problem-solving skills made me stand out to potential employers.

Conclusion

In conclusion, a photography diploma can open doors to exciting career opportunities. However, the key lies in leveraging the skills and knowledge gained from your education and applying them effectively in the real world. Focusing on business skills, building a strong portfolio, and choosing a reputable institution with knowledgeable instructors can make a significant difference in your career journey.
