Choosing Between University at Buffalo and Binghamton University: A Comparison
Countless students are faced with the daunting task of choosing between prestigious universities when planning for their higher education. Among these options, two highly-regarded institutions in the state of New York stand out: University at Buffalo (UB) and Binghamton University (BU). What should you consider when deciding between these two respected academic institutions?
Understanding Binghamton University (BU)
BU, located in the southern part of the state, ranks among the best public universities in the region. It is recognized for its strong programs in various fields, including engineering, psychology, and economics. BU's smaller student body of around 23,000 students contributes to its supportive atmosphere and personalized education. However, it's important to note that it has been well-regarded for certain fields, but not as widely known compared to UB in other academic areas.
Experience with University at Buffalo (UB)
Personally, I have experience with UB, having participated in evening courses for years, eventually leading to the completion of my degree at UB's sister college, Buffalo State. Here are some factors that I found crucial in making the decision:
Quality of Faculty
One significant drawback of UB that I encountered was the teaching quality. Many of the instructors were from India, and their inability to articulate lectures made understanding subjects like sociology a headache. Similarly, my son, a math major, had to switch to UB's sister college because of the poor understanding of instructors, many of whom were also Indian.
Geographical Considerations
UB has two campuses, which are rather far apart from each other. While the divisions of classes between the two campuses may vary, the transportation requirements can be an inconvenience as students travel between Amherst and North Campus by specially arranged buses. Additionally, the Amherst campus has issues with parking, which can be challenging for students.
Climate and Safety
Winter weather in Buffalo is notorious for its raw winds and cold temperatures. The walking distances on both campuses can be arduous, especially for those living on the Amherst campus. The north campus, in particular, is a concern when it comes to safety. The architectural design creates numerous hiding spots, making it a less secure environment for students. The student union's design also lacks social aspects, with booths that do not promote communication between students.
School of Law
The School of Law at UB, while having notable alumni, may not be the best fit for all students. Comparing it to other well-regarded law schools, UB's law program lacks the warmth seen at institutions like the University of Toledo College of Law. Some well-known authors have attended its graduate program in English and writing, including Charles Baxter, but this alone is not enough to recommend the undergraduate degree.
Conclusion
When deciding between University at Buffalo and Binghamton University, it's important to consider several factors. If academic rigor, personalized education, and a smaller campus community are key priorities, Binghamton University might be the better choice. On the other hand, if you are willing to face some of the challenges such as geographical issues and questions about faculty quality, UB could still offer a solid academic experience. Ultimately, the choice depends on your personal preferences, academic goals, and what you prioritize in your higher education experience.
