The path to pursuing a career in aviation, whether as a pilot, aerospace engineer, or aviation manager, begins with choosing the right subjects in A-levels. This article explores the essential subjects to prepare for higher education and entry-level positions in the aviation industry.

Core Subjects for A-Level:

To study aviation at university level, particularly for those interested in becoming a pilot, aerospace engineer, or aviation manager, it is crucial to take certain A-level subjects:

Mathematics: Essential for understanding flight mechanics, navigation, and engineering principles. This subject is fundamental for grasping the complex calculations and theoretical foundations required in aviation. Physics: Important for grasping the principles of flight, aerodynamics, and the physical forces acting on aircraft. Physics provides the backbone for understanding how aircraft operate and interact with the atmosphere. Geography: Useful for understanding air traffic navigation and environmental factors affecting aviation. This subject helps in comprehending the environmental and geographic aspects that impact aviation operations. Computer Science: Beneficial for those interested in aviation technology, simulation, and software development. With the increasing role of technology in aviation, computer science skills are becoming increasingly important. Importance of Mathematics and Science at GCSE Level:

To become a commercial airline pilot, just about all airlines require at least 5 GCSEs, including Mathematics, English, and Science, at grades A-C or equivalent. These are the very minimum qualifications that you should aim to achieve. While these three core areas are essential, your choice of subjects at secondary education level beyond these does not matter much. Geography is a strong choice due to its relevance, but even subjects like music or art can be beneficial in developing a well-rounded individual.

Post-A-Level Requirements:

Prior to university, there is no required education beyond the required flight training and ground school classes. However, in the real world, a bachelor's degree is practically a requirement for employment with major airlines. Nearly every major airline pilot hired within the last 30 years has a degree. The degree can be in any subject, but it should be challenging and demonstrate academic success. Many pilots choose subjects like math, science, or engineering not because of a necessity but to showcase their ability to succeed in a demanding academic environment.

Significance of Academic Background:

A bachelor's degree is also seen as a measure of cognitive ability. For instance, aviation degrees, like my degree in Petroleum Engineering / Geological Engineering with a minor in geophysics, showed the Navy that I could succeed in a challenging academic environment, which is a valuable trait for pilots. Similarly, the airline understands that having a challenging degree indicates the candidate's capability to handle a 737 type rating and the intense training required.

Major airlines invest significant amounts of money in pilot training, often up to US$100,000. Therefore, they want to ensure that the candidate is capable of being a high-performing pilot without needing remedial classes. This is why a degree, even if not directly applicable to the job, is a crucial demonstration to prospective employers that the candidate has the skills and analytical ability to excel in the aviation industry.
