Which is Better for IT Studies: DTU, IIIT Delhi, or IGDTUW?
Choosing the right Institute for a Bachelor of Technology () in Information Technology can be a daunting task, especially for students with a keen interest in research and higher studies. As a student at IIIT Delhi, my insights and knowledge of DTU and other institutions can help guide your decision. This article examines the advantages and disadvantages of DTU, IIIT Delhi, and IGDTUW in terms of workload, placements, GPA, and extracurricular activities.
Comparing Course Workload
The first aspect to consider is the course workload. At IIIT Delhi, the workload is significantly higher compared to DTU and NSIT, which can make the learning experience quite rigorous. For instance, the placement statistics for the year, as of 15th September 2020, show that out of a batch size of 310, only 38 received full-time placement offers, and for a batch size of 382, only 19 internships were offered. This trend is expected to continue as the batch sizes increase. Students at DTU, NSIT, and other institutions have a relatively lighter workload, which gives them more time to pursue their interests and prepare for placements independently.
Placement Opportunities
From a placement perspective, DTU and other technical universities have a better corporate reach. Companies visit these institutions in large numbers, providing a wealth of opportunities for students. On the other hand, IIIT Delhi faces some challenges in terms of placement opportunities. Non-technical companies do not visit IIIT Delhi, and the number of companies visiting is far less compared to DTU. Additionally, the number of placements and internships at IIIT Delhi is significantly lower, especially for a larger batch size. The placements and internships at DTU and other institutes are more reliable and diverse, giving students a wider range of options.
Achieving High GPA
Achieving a high GPA is also a critical aspect of college life. IIIT Delhi requires continuous dedication and hard work throughout the semester, whereas DTU and NSIT students can achieve a good GPA with less effort. For example, a GPA of 0.8 at IIIT Delhi is equivalent to a GPA of 0.5 at NSIT and a GPA of 0.5 at IIIT Delhi is equivalent to a GPA of 0.3 at DTU. This is a direct reflection of the rigorous academic environment at IIIT Delhi compared to other institutions. To maintain a good GPA at DTU and NSIT, students need to start studying two weeks before exams, while at IIIT Delhi, students must put in continuous effort from day one.
Extracurricular Activities and Campus Life
Extracurricular activities play a crucial role in balancing academic life. DTU and NSIT, with their established history and strong brand, offer a wide range of opportunities for sports, cultural events, and inter-college events, which helps in personal development and social bonding. IIIT Delhi, being a growing institution, offers similar opportunities but with a slight lag. Nonetheless, students at IIIT Delhi have plenty of chances to showcase their talents and participate in various activities.
Online Semester Challenges
The ongoing online semester, despite initial promises of being less rigorous, has been challenging. Faculty members continue to follow the offline semester pace, resulting in around 15-16 hours of screen time daily. This has led to health issues and missing out on important aspects of campus life. The academic department has failed to take student input and be transparent in decision-making. Students are expected to work under poor conditions and without clear rules for support in case of emergencies, such as health issues related to the ongoing pandemic.
While the first semester for the incoming batch will start in December, it is expected that the curriculum and teaching methods will remain the same. Students should be mentally prepared for a demanding and challenging academic year. For IIITDians reading this, keep up the good work and manage your stress levels.
