Decisions, Decisions: Navigating Medical College Allotments After NEET 2020 Counselling

After months of anticipation and rigorous preparation, the results of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET 2020) have finally been announced. The journey from applying to being allotted a seat in a prestigious medical college is a journey filled with emotion and decision-making. This blog post aims to share my experience in the NEET 2020 counselling process and narrate the pivotal moments that led to my final choice. Let's dive in.

The First Allotment: A State-Wide Excitement

It was in the early days of the year when I received an allocation from the All India Quota (AIQ) counselling. I was fortunate enough to secure a seat at SSMC Rewa, a recognized medical college in Madhya Pradesh. However, the decision to accept it was not an easy one. Within a few days, I received an offer from ESIC Alwar in Rajasthan through the state counselling round. After due consideration, I opted for ESIC Alwar due to my family’s preference that I stay within the state. This was a crucial decision, as it meant I would not have to leave my loved ones behind for several years.

The Second Allotment and the Emotional Dilemma

My journey didn't end there. During the AIQ counselling rounds, further opportunities came my way. In round 1, the AIQ session took place. I received my second allotment at ABVGMC Vidisha, which is situated in Madhya Pradesh and is known for its calmness and greenery. This was exciting, but it presented an emotional dilemma. I was also offered a seat at ESIC Bangalore or Hyderabad in the subsequent AIQ round 2. Bangalore had a rank cut-off of 8900, and my rank was 9551, indicating a high chance of securing a seat. However, my family wanted me to stay in Rajasthan and the decision would impact them emotionally if I had to leave.

The Anxiety and Final Decision

The waiting period before the final round of counselling was filled with anxiety and contemplation. I weighed the pros and cons of each option. My brain suggested that opting for ESIC Bangalore or Hyderabad was the logical choice, given their reputation and the high chances of securing a seat. However, my heart, influenced by my family’s wishes and the emotional turmoil of being away, made a different choice. Finally, I accepted my allotment from the Punjab State counselling process, where I was allotted GMC Patiala.

Reflection and Conclusion

It was a long wait, but it was also a journey that taught me the value of compromise and family’s support. My final decision to stay near my home and attend GMC Patiala, despite the initial allure of attending a more renowned college in the state of West Bengal, has brought me a sense of peace. The choice was not made easily, but in the end, it feels like the right one.

Weighing in the heart and the brain can be a challenging task. I'm hopeful that in the future, I won't have any regrets regarding my current decision. I welcome all suggestions and comments from fellow aspirants on this journey.

Until next time, toodles!
