Essential Strategies for Success in the IIM-CAT Exams
The Indian Institutes of Management Common Admission Test (CAT) is a rigorous exam that demands a well-rounded approach to preparation. Many candidates struggle, despite their prior academic prowess, due to a lack of strategic preparation and the unexpected complications of the exam. Here, we explore the experiences of two individuals, P1 and P2, who took different approaches to their preparation and achieved vastly different results, demonstrating the importance of certain key strategies.
Understanding the Nature of the IIM-CAT Exam
The IIM-CAT exam truly justifies this verse from the Bhagavad Gita: “Do your work but do not expect for good results.” The exam, with its unique sections - Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), Quantitative Ability (QA), and Verbal Ability Reading Comprehension (VARC) - can be unpredictable and challenging. Success in the CAT requires preparation that goes beyond mere textbook learning.
Case Study: P1’s Approach and Result
P1 prepared for the CAT in his third year of graduation. He had a strong foundation in English and Mathematics and consistently scored above the 99th percentile in mock exams. Confidence was high, and he was sure of achieving a good percentile in the actual CAT. However, his strategy backfired.
Due to the pressure to maintain the same percentile as mock scores, P1 experienced nervousness. A sudden change in the DILR pattern also demotivated him, thinking that scoring just 12-13 out of 32 might not be enough. This mental state led to underperformance, with him primarily not attempting the solvable questions and also poor performance in the quant section.
Case Study: P2’s Approach and Result
In contrast, P2 did not start his preparation for the CAT until his fourth year after being placed in an organization. With only 3-4 months left to prepare and a weaker foundation in English, P2 focused on studying consistently without expectations. Instead of targeting past years’ papers, he aimed to learn the basics and build on them. Due to his calm preparation and low expectations, P2’s performance was much better.
During the exam, P2 approached the DILR section without the pressure of results, focusing on solving the questions he knew, and even tackling some more challenging ones. He excelled in the quant section and scored well in English, despite not expecting a high percentile there.
Results and Key Learnings
The results revealed stark differences. P1 achieved a 90th percentile with his strong mocks but underperformed in the actual exam due to anxiety and pressure. Conversely, P2 scored a 97th percentile with a 74th percentile in English, a 98.46th percentile in DILR, and a 98.48th percentile in Quant. P2, despite his modest expectations, received calls from new IIMs and converted some positions.
Key Takeaways for CAT Preparation
1. Study Consistently:
Consistent preparation is paramount. Avoid the trap of focusing solely on past exam papers. Instead, build a strong foundational understanding and gradually enhance your skills.
2. Manage Expectations:
Set realistic goals and do not allow fear of failure to demotivate you. Approach the exam with a clear mind and a focus on what you can learn, rather than expecting a specific percentile.
3. Practice Effective Time Management:
During the exam, focus on solving questions you know well and do not waste time on those beyond your capability. This approach can significantly improve your overall score.
