Experiences and Insights of Studying in an All-Male College

Every educational journey carries its unique set of experiences, and attending a college with a single gender provides a distinct lens through which one perceives academic and personal growth. In this article, we explore the nuances of studying in an all-male college and the contrast between such an environment and co-educational schools. While my personal experience is limited to Delhi University post-12th, I bring to light insights from studying in a single-sex school, Don Bosco Alaknanda.

The Co-Ed Experience

Before delving into my all-male college experience, I spent a year in a co-ed primary school, Don Bosco Alaknanda. While the nursery level does not provide a true understanding of gender dynamics, my first-hand experience during the first standard was crucial in highlighting the differences between co-ed and all-male settings. The school I attended in standards 2 to 12 was Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, which I attended for 12 years until 2017. At Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, the absence of girls had both advantages and drawbacks.

Advantages of an All-Male College

Freedom and Independence: One of the most notable advantages of an all-male college is the sense of freedom. Without girls around, there is no social pressure to constantly manage your behavior and appearance. This environment can foster a more relaxed attitude towards self-expression and honest interactions with peers. For instance, in Don Bosco Alaknanda, there was no need to worry about girls' reactions when you were fighting with someone or receiving below-average marks, as the entire class would likely share similar results.

Educational Support and Interaction: In a coeducational setting, gender dynamics can sometimes complicate academic discussions and interactions. In an all-male college, interactions can be more focused on the subject matter, fostering a stronger sense of camaraderie and support among peers. This environment can also encourage more straightforward and open debate, as participants do not have to navigate potential gender-related barriers.

Drawbacks of an All-Male College

Limited Female Interaction: The primary drawback of an all-male college is the lack of interaction with females. This can be particularly challenging when transitioning to a co-educational college, as one may struggle to navigate social norms and behaviors expected in a mixed-gender environment. I faced this challenge when I moved to Sardar Patel Vidyalaya after my experience at Don Bosco Alaknanda. The shyness and discomfort around interacting with girls continued for several years, highlighting the importance of exposure to diverse social environments.

Closed Cultural Perspective: An all-male college environment can sometimes lead to a limited viewpoint on cultural and social aspects. Exposure to different genders can provide valuable insights into diverse thought processes and behaviors. While it is possible to develop a broad perspective through other means, an all-male college can create a more insular community compared to a co-educational setting.

After spending 12 years in a all-male college, I gradually became comfortable with interacting with girls and girls' perspectives.
