Insights into Moroccan Society from a Western Perspective
Living in Morocco since 2014, I have gained unique insights into the social and cultural fabric of the country. As an expat from the United Kingdom, I possess a vantage point that offers both an introspective look and an international context. In many ways, I know more about Morocco and Moroccans than many natives do. Here are some key observations and insights based on my experiences.
A Closer Look at Moroccan Social Norms
One of the most striking aspects of Moroccan society is the cultural expectations and norms that often limit individual freedom. Many Moroccans are compelled to conform to societal ideals, which can be unrealistic and oppressive. This is driven by various factors such as judgment, gossip, and prejudice. This conformity is deeply ingrained and often pervasive, resulting in a sense of community that can be suffocating.
For instance, I have encountered numerous LGBTQ individuals who remain in the closet due to fear of social repercussions. Two friends of mine who are gay have even resorted to pleading with me not to reveal their orientation to any other Moroccans, including their mutual friend. This level of censorship and fear is prevalent and underscores the intense social pressure felt by many Moroccans.
Similarly, there are many individuals who are atheists or agnostics, given the strong Islamic influence in Morocco. However, these individuals often struggle to disclose their beliefs openly, even to close family and friends. This further highlights the stark distinction between private beliefs and public behavior in Moroccan society.
Freedoms for Foreigners vs. Moroccans
Interestingly, while Moroccan society imposes numerous constraints on its citizens, it often extends more freedom to foreigners living within its borders. This discrepancy between the treatment of locals and foreigners is notable and raises questions about the true nature of Moroccan society.
For example, expatriates enjoy a certain level of freedom of expression and lifestyle options that many Moroccans do not. Their social, political, and personal behaviors are often met with a more permissive attitude. This dual standard is a double-edged sword, as it can lead to feelings of isolation and disappointment for many Moroccans.
The Impact of Strong Community Ties
Though the desire for community and social cohesion is strong in Moroccan society, there are times when it can be overly protective. Moroccans often exhibit a level of worried concern for the well-being of others, bordering on a concerning overprotection. This overzealousness can stifle individual growth and self-discovery.
For example, young Moroccans are often discouraged from exploring their personal lives and interests, as adults closely monitor and control their every move. This overbearing concern can lead to a sense of conformity and a lack of freedom, which can be detrimental in the long term.
The Future of Moroccan Society
However, Morocco is undergoing rapid social and political change. The current social values, deeply rooted in Islamic principles, will evolve significantly in the coming years. The Islam of today will be vastly different from the Islam of the future, especially as younger generations take over.
The government must keep pace with this change to maintain stability and ensure the continued relevance of Islam in Moroccan society. If it attempts to stifle social progression, it risks widening the gap between public opinion and governmental policies. Such a shift could ultimately lead to the diminishing role of Islam in governance.
In conclusion, while Moroccan society presents a mix of richness and constraints, it is clear that change is inevitable and crucial for the future. Understanding these dynamics is essential for both outsiders and insiders to navigate and contribute positively to the evolving culture of Morocco.
