As a teacher, have you ever encountered school rules that seemed excessive or unjustified? At my previous Catholic school, the dress code was so strict that it even dictated what color of hair accessories the girls could wear. Everything was required to be in school colors: black, white, gold, and purple. While conforming to larger hair bows and ties did not seem like a significant issue, administrators took it a step further by insisting that ponytail bands also adhered to the rules. It might seem ironic that the color of a ponytail band could have any impact on a student's ability to learn, but the school went to the extent of writing up a few girls and sending formal letters home. Does this overly strict rule really enhance the learning environment?

Overly Specific Rules Can Distract from More Serious Issues

While this rule was being enforced, other more significant issues were being ignored. For example, in another district, the rule stating one could not touch kids was a direct result of a lawsuit involving a teacher leaving a mark on a student and being sued. The teacher won the case, but other educators expanded the implications of the incident inappropriately, leading to the assumption that physical contact with students was entirely prohibited. This is contrary to school policies and procedures, which should allow for some level of touch under appropriate circumstances, such as comforting a student.

The Influence of Lounge Gossip vs. Official Policies

Another issue that often arises is the spread of so-called "rules" through lounge gossip. In my experience, there were instances when teachers and students propagated a set of unwritten "rules" that appeared to be more strict than the actual policies. For example, the statement "You can't retain kids in this school" was a common belief, despite there being no official rule to that effect. I followed the written procedures and retained a very immature child, an action that was then followed by the implementation of 30 such procedures, which were instituted by three Kindergarten teachers who were concerned with the matter.

While it is essential to maintain a safe and respectful environment for all students, some of these rules or restrictions may actually hinder the learning process and cause unnecessary stress for both teachers and students.
