The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram (IISER TVM) is a vibrant academic environment where students come from diverse linguistic backgrounds. This diversity significantly influences the languages used in interactions among students. In this article, we explore the language dynamics, particularly focusing on the use of Malayalam, among the student body at IISER TVM.

Language Usage at IISER TVM

At IISER TVM, the primary language of instruction and academic communication is English. This common language ensures that students from various parts of India can participate effectively in academic discussions and laboratory sessions. However, the campus is also filled with students who are native to Kerala and other South Indian states, making Malayalam a prominent conversational language among local students.

According to many students, English and Hindi are the most commonly used languages outside of formal settings. Asignificant portion of the student population hails from Kerala, and hence, a substantial number of students are fluent in Malayalam. Nonetheless, since Malayalam speakers comprise only a minority of the total student population, it is used less frequently compared to English and Hindi in broader interactions.

Personal Experiences and Observations

From personal experience, students often use Hindi or English while chatting or communicating with juniors and seniors. For instance, an undergraduate student from the BS-MS batch 22-27 shared their observations, mentioning that most conversations are in English or Hindi, and that a few students might use Malayalam in interactions with others from South India.

Ritwik, who is part of the same batch, further elaborates. 'Though Malayalam is used by some students, it is more common among those from the same linguistic region. As a non-Malayalam speaker, I find that the interactions primarily take place in English or Hindi. This environment has been quite enriching for my language skills, and I fully appreciate the respect for all languages at IISER TVM.'

Language Usage in the Central Dining Hall

A significant observation made by students pertains to the usage of languages in the central dining hall. Here, the predominant language used for interaction is English, followed closely by Malayalam. Malayalam speakers make up a minority of the student body, with only around 50 batch mates identified as such. Hindi is mentioned third, indicating its importance in campus communication.

Other regional languages notably spoken include Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, and Bengali, with varying degrees of frequency depending on the origin of the students. These linguistic dynamics reflect the diverse cultural and linguistic fabric of IISER TVM, creating an inclusive and linguistically rich academic community.
