Life-Changing Adventures as an Exchange Student: My Best Experiences

As an exchange student, the adventure is in the details. Each experience is unique and shapes the person you become. Today, I would like to share some of the highlights of my time abroad as an exchange student.

Exchange in the United States: A Multifaceted Journey

During my time in the United States, I visited two major cities, each offering its own brand of excitement and cultural richness. My first stop was New York City (NYC), where I had the opportunity to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art and watch the Mermaid Parade on Coney Island. Our adventure continued at Universal Studios in Orlando, where I discovered the magic of the Disney World and visited several colleges in Florida. Additionally, I celebrated Christmas at my grandmother's house and Thanksgiving with friends.

My noteworthy experience also included attending the Highland Games in Alma, Michigan, where my host sister played in a pipe and drums band. We also went to two St. Patrick's Day Parades in Chicago, creating unforgettable memories. Moreover, my daily life with the host family, making friends in high school, and bonding with other exchange students was just as enriching as the organized activities.

Exchange in Australia: A Sporty and Culinary Adventure

My time in Australia made a lasting impression, primarily due to the sports I played and the food I explored. I participated in a unique Australian sport called OzTag, which was a highlight as I scored my first point in the game. I also took up food technology and cooked with my peers, one of my creations becoming a birthday gift for my mother. This program taught me far more than academic lessons; it was an intercultural experience that was invaluable.

High School Exchange in Bavaria: A Rare Intercultural Experience

Exchanging in high school in Bavaria was undoubtedly a life-changing experience. Visiting Oktoberfest multiple times was a memorable moment, especially during a class field trip to the Allianz Arena. My host family took me on sightseeing trips throughout Bavaria and Austria, hiking and skiing in the Alps. One of the memorable moments was a flight over Munich and in the Alps at sunset with an elderly neighbor, who had a private pilot license.

The incredible culture of Bavaria, including its food, music, dance, and the Bavarian dialect, deeply resonated with me. I even joined a local Volkstanz folk dance club to immerse myself further. The 2006 World Cup was a spectacle, and being a part of the bliss and unity was unforgettable.

The ultimate adventure was a month-long bus tour of Germany, a whirlwind of sightseeing, partying, and bonding with 40 other exchange students. We traveled through diverse regions, from the South (Bamberg and Weimar) to the East (Dresden and Quedlinburg) and the North (Kiel, Sylt, Hamburg, and Bremen), ending back in the South (Cologne, Frankfurt, and Stuttgart). The tour was a magical experience that solidified the transformation in my life.

Conclusion: A Valuable and Enduring Experience

My exchanges were not without their challenges, but the overall experience was incredible. These adventures shaped who I am today and might influence my current career path. If you're considering an exchange, embrace the opportunity with open arms. You never know what unforgettable experiences await!
