Life of an Introvert at SVNIT Surat: Challenges and Triumphs

Adapting to life in SVNIT Surat, especially as an introvert, can be challenging. However, it also holds its own set of rewards and learning opportunities. Joining the SVNIT community marked both a significant transition and personal growth for me as an introvert.

Transition and Initial Challenges

College life at SVNIT can be overwhelming for many, and for an introvert, it is no different. The exposure to a larger social circle and constant interaction can be daunting. Moving into a hostel added another layer of complexity, as the lack of personal space and constant interaction with roommates and peers could be stressful. Being around a large group of people for extended periods can exacerbate social anxiety, making introductions and social engagements challenging.

Social Expectations and Friendships

The pressure to socialize and maintain friendships can be intense. Initially, my interactions were limited to individuals I met in the classroom, through administrative tasks, or classmates with whom I shared classes. Over time, I found a circle of friends who accepted and understood me, which made the transition smoother. Despite these efforts, the expectations from extroverted friends sometimes forced me to participate in activities that I would have preferred to stay away from. While events like religious gatherings, fests, or social outings could serve as fun experiences for others, they often felt like a source of stress and discomfort.

Navigating College Life with Care

Friendship and professional relationships at SVNIT involved balancing social expectations with personal boundaries. In my second year, a significant breakup further isolated me from my group of friends. Trust issues developed during this period led me to avoid social and group activities, steering me towards a more secluded lifestyle. Yet, an opportunity to lead a team of 42 offered an opportunity for personal growth, pushing me out of my comfort zone and helping me build confidence.

Social Integration and Self-Discovery

Engaging in college activities provided an outlet for personal growth. My participation in irrelevant activities did not define my worth, and eventually, I found ways to contribute to the college while adhering to my interests. Writing for our college newsletter, Renesa, connected me with my passion for writing, allowing me to experiment and express myself. Through these activities, I discovered different facets of myself that align with my introverted nature, such as leadership and creativity. These experiences were invaluable, teaching me important lessons about resilience and self-acceptance.

Challenges and Triumphs

Life as an introvert at SVNIT is not without its challenges. I faced criticism and ridicule from my peers for being introverted, which was demotivating. However, focusing on personal goals and learning to do what I wanted, rather than what was expected, proved to be a more fulfilling path. The lessons learned from these experiences have helped me develop a strong sense of self and adhere to my authentic personality.

Although the journey was not always smooth, the overall experience at SVNIT was meaningful. I learned to be my true self, contributing to my personal growth and understanding of my own introverted traits.
