Is Pursuing an Education at MIT Worth It, or Should You Consider Other Options?
Going to MIT as a tremendous experience. It was definitely worth it.
VERY MUCH WORTH IT!!
I recently retired from being an EC (Education Coordinator) for the MIT Alumnus who interviews applicants. Each Spring, we meet with the new admits, and one of them usually asks, 'Is going to MIT worth it, or should I just go for any other university?' This question always elicits an enthusiastic 'Yes,' but it's often followed by either, 'I am not sure I could get in anymore.'
For me, MIT was a great choice, and I would pick it again. However, it's not right for everyone. The Admissions Office makes sure they only choose students who would thrive at MIT.
Con sidering Your Options Thoughtfully
Another question for my 'old codger' side:
Victor objects to the use of 'any other university' since that denotes a careless attitude. There are many fine Liberal Arts schools that don't offer engineering beyond flipping the light switch on or off. Be specific. MIT connotes engineering. You should ask if the choice is between MIT and other universities with reputable Colleges of Engineering. What field do you want to enter? Is MIT the only school that educates in your desired specialty? Have you any idea if a State or other private university can meet your requirements?Answer these questions honestly, and you can make a better decision. Your future is in your hands – take charge of it.
Alice's Perspective: MIT is an Outstanding School
MIT is an outstanding school. If you have the opportunity to attend, you will have no regrets. The school is justly famous for the quality of its education, resources, academics, faculty, and alumni network.
The True Picture of MIT
MIT is an excellent university… but there’s a list of 131 excellent US universities.
In my opinion, the problem with MIT is that they have such a strongly positive public image that people often assume MIT is good at things they don’t even do. For example, even within my field of computer engineering – a field in which MIT is generally fairly active – there are many niches in which MIT simply isn’t doing much. So think carefully about exactly what you want to do. Look online for where active research groups in that niche are and then look closer at those places to see what opportunities each university would offer, both in general and specifically in that niche. If MIT is active in your desired niche, it might be a very good choice for you. However, if it isn’t, well, it isn’t.
The choice shouldn’t be 'MIT vs. anywhere' – it should be among the places that are best in the niche you care about.
Choosing the Right University
Remember, no single university is perfect for everyone. It’s essential to conduct thorough research on your field of interest and find the best matching program. Ask yourself:
What is your desired field of study? Are all niche areas in your field well-represented at MIT? Do other universities with reputably strong engineering programs offer what you need?Only then can you make an informed decision that ensures your educational journey aligns with your future goals.
Good luck in your search and future endeavors!
