Medical Student's Holiday Experience: Navigating Hostel Life and Longing for Home
I joined the medical college and hostel in the month of November 2022. Ever since, my life has been a balance between academic rigor and the comfort of home. My weekends are crucial for catching up with my family in Kolkata, but my rigorous coursework, especially as an academic responsibility (CR) role, often limits my ability to frequent home. This has led to a carefully planned schedule where I often head home on weekends when I'm done with intense sessions.
Thelege College Life and Its Demands
While the hostel provides an incomparable camaraderie, it also presents a stark contrast from a comfortable home life. Daily meals, social interactions, and managing personal space can be daunting when living with students from diverse backgrounds. However, over time, I've adapted and forged friendships that truly resonate with me.
occasionally, my hostel life gets a funny twist as friends and I would randomly explore the city, even bunking classes for a bit of mischief. While the constant urge to go back home and reconnect with old friends remains strong, hostel life has taught me invaluable lessons about independence and time management.
Family Connections and Weekend Trips
Weekends mean family and home. Whenever my academic commitments (internals and PCTs) allow, I make a beeline for Kolkata. familial bonds remain my strongest, and weekends are a precious time to rekindle the joy of being together. Despite the distance, family calls are rare, but my presence and time spent at home can never be quantified in calls, as they mean so much more in person.
One of the highlights of my semester was a potential college trip, but unforeseen challenges such as exams and other commitments have thwarted these plans. However, the memories of random trips and spontaneous fun with my hostel friends still hold a special place in my heart. While we might fake our own vacations, the longing for a real one to return home is ever-present.
Personal Growth Through Hostel Life
Hostel life has been transformational. It's taught me about self-reliance and time management – skills that I would have struggled to develop in a more traditional environment. The conversations I've had with my friends, like the one about attending events in a nutshell, have made me realize that I'm now signed up for something thrilling. I eagerly await my academic breaks to celebrate with family and catch up on missed time.
The dream remains: a college trip to Manali with my college buddies. Until then, I continue to cherish the moments I get to spend with my family and grow both personally and professionally.
