Memories and Lessons from Scouting: A Journey of Adventure and Growth

Scouting has been a significant part of my life for over a decade. From my early days as a young scout to my involvement in summer camps and even to international jamborees, each experience has contributed to shaping my personal and professional life. In this article, I will explore some of the most memorable moments from my scouting journey and the lessons I've gained.

Overnighter with a Nemesis

At the age of 12, I participated in several overnighters where we slept in tents. One such experience stands out, though it was not without its challenges. My friend, nicknamed "Chopper," was a big, overweight fellow. One night, he woke me up and asked if he could go to the latrine, but he was too scared of the dark. Reluctantly, I agreed to accompany him to the Kiboe, a communal latrine. We waited until he was done before heading back to our tent. I felt a deep sense of empathy for him and never spoke of it to anyone else. (Note: This incident is a sensitive one and has been withheld from others.)

1975 World Jamboree in Lillehammer, Norway

The 1975 World Jamboree was an unforgettable experience. We visited Goose Bay, Labrador, Reykjavik, Iceland, Oslo, Stockholm, and Helsinki. But the highlight was living with a Finnish family in Rauma for a week. It was such a profound and memorable experience, and I am forever grateful for those days spent overseas.

Summer Camp Revelries

The best memory of my scouting experience definitely includes singing songs around the campfire with my best friends, especially my boyfriend. It was such a time of joy and camaraderie, playing games and enjoying the simple pleasures of summer camping.

Working at the Local Council’s Summer Camp

I had the incredible opportunity to work at my local council's summer camp for six years. This experience was not just about playing and having fun but also about learning valuable life skills. I made lifelong friends and learned leadership and creative thinking skills, both of which proved invaluable when I later joined the US Army Special Forces.

One of the most memorable experiences during my time at the camp was my first time getting drunk at a National Jamboree. I also lost my virginity to a smoking hot Swedish girl, but that's a different story.

Philimoto High Adventure Ranch Adventure

In 1967, I had the honor of attending the Philimoto High Adventure Ranch with the Toledo Area Council, now Erie Shores Council. The journey began with a Trailways bus from Toledo, OH, to Chicago, IL, followed by a tour of the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. We then made our way to Denver, CO, via the CBQ RR Denver Zephyr. The ride to Pike's Peak was a thrilling experience with switchbacks that made us feel like we were reaching the edge of the world.

From there, we were on another Trailways bus to Cimarron, NM. We received safety instructions and rations before being divided into crews to set up our campsite. We learned to hang food between two pine trees to keep it safe from bears. Unfortunately, a black bear managed to get into our food and destroyed much of it. We bravely kept the pot banging and flashlight flashing until the bear disappeared with the food. Eventually, the Ranch Ranger supplied us with new rations, and we continued our trek.

We hiked through the backcountry for ten days, tackling steep trails and switchbacks, crossing streams, and even scaling mountains. Horseback riding was a refreshing break from the constant hiking. One of the most exciting moments was when a large rattlesnake approached our camp. Some brave scouts prepared and cooked a small piece of snake meat for everyone to taste. The bus ride back to Denver was filled with excitement as we passed through the "Garden of the Gods," played a softball game with soldiers, and visited the Air Force Academy.

Looking back, I am deeply impressed by the meticulous planning, coordination, and effort that went into organizing this adventure for around 50 scouts and leaders. It was truly a journey to remember, and I wish more teens could experience such wonders.

Post-Jamboree Reflections

My involvement in scouting has not only given me incredible memories but also taught me valuable skills such as leadership, problem-solving, and resilience. Each scouting experience has played a crucial role in preparing me for future challenges, both in my personal and professional life. I remain grateful for these experiences and the friends I've made through scouting.
