Escaping and Exploring: Our Secret Escape during High School

t

Remember those days of high school? There were moments so significant, some still leave a lingering effect. For instance, one of my most memorable ‘wow’ moments from high school was the time I 'fellow friend,' as we spent most of our high school years together, went on a ‘play hookie’ adventure. One that defined our bond, and we will never forget. It was the day before our final days in school, and we decided to take a daring risk and play hooky.

The Adventure Begins

Despite the school rules and the tremendous sense of juvenile rebellion, we decided to go to his place. Little did we know, the fun was just beginning. In his basement, using a hammer and pliers, we nearly turned it into a shooting range; the pool table turned into a makeshift arena as we fired 22 rimfire slugs across his rooms and the basement. The energy and excitement were palpable, awakening the playful spirit hidden within. But then, as history often teaches us, the moment arrived when our fun was about to come to an abrupt halt.

The Unexpected Interruption

t

The phone rang, interrupting our game. We looked at each other, and after a few confused moments, my friend decided to answer the call. Upon his return, with a grim face, he handed me the phone. It was his mother. “My Mom wants us to pick up milk,” he mentioned flatly. That unexpected request forced us to end our adventure abruptly, underlining the reality that our decisions have consequences.

Opening Up: A Stage Performance That Changed Minds

t

Another defining moment came when I took the stage at the Sixth Form Farewell. This wasn't just any ordinary school event; it was an act of improv and raw spontaneity. My father, a real character who once taught me the importance of confidence and character, was somewhat of a role model. I made it up as I went along and was met with laughter and appreciation. According to those in attendance, the performance was 'the funniest thing they’d ever seen,' and it helped establish my reputation as a bit of a legend during those times at Mullumbimby High in 1975.

Awe-Inspiring Impact

t

On the other end of the spectrum, I had the privilege of witnessing a powerful act of kindness. I have a friend who, despite being subject to bullying by the very same bully who used to torment me, still found the courage to approach him. In a conversation that felt surreal, my friend mentioned, “I only bullied y’all because I liked you.” In that moment, the stereotype of bullying as a form of intimidation dissolved, replaced by a powerful reminder of the human capacity for empathy and understanding.

Lessons Learned

These memories have always stayed with me, teaching me valuable lessons about the importance of sticking to the right path despite the allure of adventure or the desire to rebel. They remind me of the power of humor and the profound effect one individual can have in promoting empathy and compassion. Life, after all, is a series of choices, and it is in these choices that we truly shape our identities.
