My Journey from Engineering to Social Sciences: Why I Chose TISS
My academic journey took an unexpected turn after I graduated. Previously, I was an aspiring IIT student, scoring a decent rank in JEE Mains and Advanced. However, I decided not to join prominent institutions like BITs Pilani and NITs. Instead, I opted for Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IIST). My time at IIST was invaluable in honing my technical skills, but it was clear to me that I wanted to explore a different dimension of society.
Seeking Understanding of the Labour Force
Amidst my engineering studies, I developed a keen interest in understanding the socio-economic landscape and, more specifically, the complex dynamics of the labour force. The potential for societal transformation through labour was something that resonated deeply with me. I was particularly drawn to the idea of transforming these complex systems to positively impact future generations.
During my search for the best institutions offering a degree in social sciences, TISS stood out. Known for its exceptional programs, TISS was consistently ranked among the best universities in India for social sciences. The range of courses available was overwhelming, but the M.A. in Globalisation and Labour and the M.A. in Social Work in Livelihoods and Social Entrepreneurship piqued my interest the most. Upon careful analysis, I decided to pursue the M.A. in Globalisation and Labour, a course that places significant emphasis on research and analysis.
Transition from Technical to Social Sciences
Ecstatic about the prospect of joining TISS, I submitted my application and was delighted to be accepted. My decision to leave the promising career path in ISRO, where I was placed as a SC Scientist/Engineer, was not an easy one. However, the satisfaction I derived from my new course and the exposure it provided propelled me forward. Even now, many have questioned my decision, but I am sure this question will always be there in front of me.
One key factor that drove me towards TISS was the comprehensive curriculum focusing on the informal sector, which is rarely covered in other courses. The course delves into aspects of social protection, welfare state management, and principles of labour from both white-collar and blue-collar perspectives. Additionally, the corporate interactions and guest lectures from companies like KPMG, IOCL, Maruti, Unilever, and UNDP have been a invaluable experience. These interactions not only enhance our understanding but also prepare us for future placements and professional growth.
Improvement and Personal Growth
In just four months, I have seen remarkable progress in my confidence and analytical skills. The regular interaction with industrialists and the focus on research have significantly enhanced my academic and professional capabilities. The blend of theoretical knowledge and practical insights has been incredibly enriching. It's clear that this journey is not only about acquiring degrees but also about shaping a better future for all through informed and impactful social policies.
Despite the challenges and questions from others, I am not regretting my decision. The journey of personal and professional growth at TISS is what I cherish the most. I am excited about the future and the impact I can make in the field of social sciences as my career unfolds.
