My Journey to Dental School: A Reflection on Career Choices and Professional Fulfillment
America's dentistry profession is often viewed as the best in the world—provided it is done right. However, most dental professionals do not adhere to the highest standards. After considering various career paths, I eventually chose dental school, aiming to make a meaningful impact on people's lives.
Why Dental School?
Initially, all my fraternity brothers were heading to medical or law school. I knew I was not destined to wake up at 6 am in a hospital, and given the negative connotations associated with lawyers, dental school became the clear choice for me. I had no prior experience or knowledge in the field, making it a bold yet inspiring decision.
My father, a dentist who qualified in 1939 in the UK, provided a significant influence on my choice. He served in the Dental Corps during World War II, working under challenging conditions. His ability to provide a satisfactory living and ensure a father's presence at home were key factors in my decision. Though I started on the science side at grammar school, my practical hands-on skills and desire to emulate my father's path led me to dental school in Manchester and London, UK. I have no regrets about this choice and have contributed to society meaningfully.
The Trials of Early Dental Experiences
My first encounter with dentistry was a traumatic experience. I underwent a general anaesthetic and had several teeth extracted at the age of 6, which left a lasting impression. It wasn't until I was 10 that everything changed. A different dentist treated me exceptionally well, explaining each step and ensuring I understood the process. This new approach helped me develop a positive attitude towards dentistry and its potential to help people.
The Path to Professional Aspiration
I was initially accepted into medical school due to my helpful nature. However, at the time, Ontario was introducing a new nationalized healthcare system, OMSIP. After extensive consultations, I became convinced that maintaining independence was crucial for fulfilling my aspirations in a profession that was not being nationalized. Throughout my 45-year successful career, I never accepted insurance from any patient, valuing the doctor-patient relationship and avoiding compromises that might affect my judgment.
While I filled out necessary insurance forms, the patients had to submit them and fight for their benefits. This approach allowed me to maintain my integrity and focus on what was best for each specific patient, rather than being swayed by insurance plans.
Reflections on Career Choices and Professional Fulfillment
Choosing dental school was a defining moment in my life. It allowed me to combine my practical skills with the desire to help others, leading to a fulfilling and successful career. Early negative experiences taught me the importance of compassion and communication, while the practicalities of starting a dental practice in a nationalized healthcare system reinforced my commitment to independence and personal values.
Through my journey, I learned that choosing the right path is not just about the destination but also the journey itself. Each step, whether positive or challenging, has shaped me into the professional I am today. Dental school provided me with the means to achieve personal and professional fulfillment, allowing me to contribute to society and make a lasting impact on the lives of those I treat.
