My Journey with Instruments in High School Orchestras

My Journey with Instruments in High School Orchestras

Music has always been an integral part of my life, and throughout my formative years, I had the privilege to explore various musical instruments through different high school ensembles. This article explores my experiences with orchestras, pit bands, and chamber clubs that were integral parts of my high school life.

Unique Paths to Instrumental Skills

For some, the path to playing an instrument in a high school orchestra is smooth and straightforward. For others, like myself, it involves a more convoluted journey. I took up the guitar on my own and had some condensed lessons from a jazz guitarist. My experience with other instruments, such as the piano, was brief and challenging. I had taken piano lessons as a grade school kid, but note-reading was physically demanding, and I found it easier to learn by ear.

Band was not an option for me due to the physical strain of note-reading and the fact that I was already playing the guitar. My decision to opt for the guitar was driven by my love for its versatility and the freedom I felt while playing it on my own.

A Bassoon in the HS Orchestra

My musical journey took an interesting turn when I joined the high school orchestra. I played the bassoon in our high school orchestra. This was not the only ensemble I was a part of; I also played the same instrument in the concert band. Additionally, I took on a role in the pit orchestra for the spring musical and was a member of our chamber orchestra club. Each of these experiences offered a unique perspective and opportunity to grow as a musician.

Clarinet in Mayhem: Pep Band and Marching Band

My love for the clarinet continued as I joined the pep band and marching band in high school. The clarinet was my go-to instrument for these high-energy bands, which required quick thinking, precision, and a lot of energy. The marching band was particularly rewarding; it was a formative period where I learned the importance of teamwork and discipline.

Going Solo: The Violin in Senior Year

Although I had initially left the orchestra due to a seating issue in my ninth grade, I found myself back in the ensemble as a senior. This happened by chance when my home room teacher, who was also the orchestra teacher, noted that I had no classes during the orchestra period. He boldly wrote ‘Orchestra’ in the blank space and asked me to grab a violin and play what I remembered.

The song I played was Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5, which I had previously performed at a competition. Despite my nerves, I managed to play through it and the teacher was impressed. He continued to support my musical journey, even going so far as to put me in the city’s adult symphony, which he also conducted. This journey continued through college and has persevered for the past 61 years, even to this day.

Conclusion: The Enduring Love for Music

My experiences with high school orchestras have not only shaped my musical skills but have also made a lasting impact on my life. Music has always been a constant in my life, and it continues to be a source of joy and fulfillment. Whether it's the bassoon, clarinet, or violin, these instruments have played a significant role in my journey as a musician.
