My Proudest Experience: Life as an NDA Cadet
Being a cadet at the National Defence Academy (NDA) was one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences in my life. The journey was filled with rigorous training, camaraderie, and the identity that comes from facing each challenge head-on. Here, I delve into my NDA experience and share the values and legacy it instilled in me.
A Snapshot of Life at NDA
The first thing every candidate experiences at NDA is a haircut that becomes their badge of honor. Along with this haircut, each cadet is provided with a bicycle, an academy number, and assigned to a Squadron, which essentially becomes the home for the duration of their training. Cadets are given a room of their own, and these cabins are subject to inspection. This daily routine instills a sense of order and discipline in every cadet.
NDA is divided into 18 Squadrons, each named after letters in the alphabet, from Alpha to Romeo. These squadrons are further divided into four battalions, with Battalion No. 1, 2, and 3 each having four squadrons in alphabetical order, and Battalion No. 5 having two squadrons. Approximately 100 to 120 cadets are found in each squadron, divided almost equally into six terms. The squadrons compete for the Inter Squadron championship, the epitome of teamwork and team spirit. The winning squadron holds the champion banner for a term and can proudly carry it during parades and other sports events.
A Personal Journey at NDA
I joined NDA in June 1984 as part of the 70th Course, assigned to Charlie Squadron. Over the years, the Academy has undergone numerous changes, but my experience was unparalleled. The legacy of NDA, the discipline instilled, and the values imparted have remained with me through the course of my life and career.
During my time at NDA, I was known as a Flaggie and a Flyboy, positions that required a combination of physical and mental strength. It was both tough and enjoyable, a blend of rigorous training and camaraderie. The Academy transformed me from a novice into an excellent team player, instilling courage and teaching me the true meaning of honor, dedication, ethos, ethics, and honesty.
Permanence of a NDA Experience
The impact of my NDA experience goes beyond the confines of the Academy. Even when I am not in uniform, the values I learned at NDA inspire me in every aspect of my life, especially in the corporate world. The discipline, resilience, and integrity I developed during my time at NDA have shaped me into a better professional and a better person.
