Navigating Life as a Bisexual/Lesbian/Gay Person: A Day in My Life
Feb 2020
Life as a bisexual, lesbian, or gay person is not all about finding love or sex; it's about leading a fulfilling daily life as any other individual. Here’s how I, Alex, navigate my days.
Waking up to the Routine
2020 is finally coming to an end, but I started the day at 3 AM, as is my late-night habit. After a quick load of laundry and some vitamins, I found myself chatting on my laptop in the kitchen. Sometimes, I indulge in a series or a workout to keep me going throughout the day.
Today is a workday, which means at 6:30 AM, I'm waking up for my usual routine. A bathroom break, a quick shower, and a thorough brush of my teeth to feel fresh. In this chilly climate, I dress warmly, wearing two pairs of socks, two pairs of pants, three tops, and a winter coat to stay cozy. By 7:00 AM, my flatmate wakes up. We share an apartment and work together, a cozy and harmonious arrangement that we've maintained for two years.
Daily Commute and Chats
Our daily commute begins with a choice of route. I often walk through the main Promenade street with my flatmate, where we share a few topics: the weather, our work, or sometimes, our boss. However, when she’s not around, I take a scenic route along the seaside, admiring the ships and boats and the small fish in the harbor.
Once at work, we make sure to greet everyone, make coffee, and chat about the day's plans. After a few smokes, we settle in at our desks. Work isn't always exciting, but it's often engaging and challenging. Sometimes, we stay late, helping each other out when needed.
Lunch and Afternoon Break
The workday winds down at 12:00 PM with lunch. We go to our favorite bakery and get double-coated croissants, a delicious treat to keep us going. In our predominantly female workplace, we attempt to cultivate a tradition of bringing chocolate for the boss, with a choco table conveniently placed in front of my desk.
Though the chocolate table was initially a welcome perk, it often broke my focus. Therefore, I've reinstated my previous spot, resisting the urge to indulge in sweets.
Personal Time and Chores
After a pleasant lunch break, I try to finish my work as quickly as possible. This allows me to devote more time to my personal life. Three times a week, I have a gym session and visit a psychologist at an LGBT advisory center. These activities help me manage various aspects of my life, such as work stress and personal development. The psychologist has been a great support and has helped me throughout my journey.
Reflecting on the Days to Come
In eight days, my life will take a significant turn. My girlfriend is arriving, which fills me with joy and anticipation. Knowing she'll return to a familiar place will ease the pangs of her absence. She's excited to explore the beautiful landscapes and meet friends she hasn't yet met. Life has a way of balancing the happiness and sadness we experience, and I'm grateful for the reminders of those who enrich my life, even when they're not physically present.
So, this is how life as a bisexual, lesbian, or gay person can be, filled with ordinary moments that fill our days with meaning and joy. It's about finding love, cherishing moments, and making the most of every day.
