Navigating Majors: Choosing Between Business and Economics as a Political Science Major
Hi,
I was in your situation. I am pursuing a Political Science major but I knew I had to add on another major to complement my Political Science major and increase my chances of getting a job in the future. I chose Economics major because politics and economics go hand in hand. Additionally, economics has a lot of practical uses. You can go into private banking or the public sector with that major. However, there is more math in economics.
Because a lot of people have a business major, it really does not have any value behind it anymore. I think hiring managers are tired of seeing many resumes that have business majors whereas they do not see too many applicants with economic majors. So my suggestion is to speak to an advisor in the economics department, see what classes are required, and how much math you need, and maybe add on an economics major.
I hope everything works out. Best of luck!

Considering a Double Major?: Business Administration, Political Science, and Economics
If you can manage to do a double major in Business Administration and Political Science with a minor in Economics, you would be extremely valuable to a wide variety of employers when you are job-hunting after graduation. I am assuming, of course, that you kept your GPA in the low to middle 3.0 range or higher. This combination could open up numerous opportunities for you in fields like public policy, international relations, and business consulting.
Exploring Marketing as a Pathway
You really need to think about Marketing. It plays a significant role with Political Science and is the driving force behind business. It will give you insight into areas that you are not even aware of yet and won't be for years to come, but when it happens, you will be ready to take advantage. Marketing helps you understand how businesses and policies interact, making you a more well-rounded and marketable candidate in the job market.
Key Considerations for Your Choice
The choice between adding an economics minor or dropping a business major while already studying political science depends on several factors:
Interest: Do you have a true interest in economics? Or is your interest primarily in business?
Employment Goals: What kind of jobs are you targeting? Understanding the specific roles you are interested in will guide your decision.
Academic Requirements: What classes are required for each major? Are there any prerequisites or overlap between them?
Advising: Speak to academic advisors in both departments. They can provide invaluable insights and personalized guidance.
Time Management: Can you handle the workload of a double major if you choose to pursue both economics and business? Time management is crucial.
Conclusion
No matter your decision, it is important to choose a path that aligns with your interests and future career goals. Balancing political science with economics can give you a strong foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of governance, making you a versatile candidate in the job market. On the other hand, a double major with marketing can open up new avenues in understanding the intersection of politics and business.
I hope this information helps you make a well-informed decision. Best of luck with your academic and career journey!
Best regards,
