Navigating the New Normal: Life During and After Lockdown
Since the COVID-19 pandemic's onset, life has fundamentally changed for many, bringing both challenges and new opportunities. This journey is particularly poignant for individuals who have faced similar challenges in the past, such as those who have spent extended periods in isolation or under lockdown, like myself.
From Navy to Prison: Navigating Isolation
Reflecting on my 18-year-old self, I was in the navy and spent months at sea, leading to periods of extended isolation. A decade later, locking up in prison brought another round of mandatory solitude and downtime. These experiences instilled in me a resilience and a need to find self-worth through various activities. The pandemic, with its global lockdown measures, further tested my ability to find fulfillment.
Entertaining the Caveman Within
During lockdown, I turned to a variety of pastimes, much like one might imagine a caveman would. Reading, writing, drawing, making crafts like papier mache, fixing things, painting, sewing, baking, cleaning, or even learning to juggle were activities that kept my mind engaged and occupied. These activities helped me channel my boredom, reduce stress, and stay creative, even when faced with dead time.
Adapting to Remote Life
The transition to remote life, both personal and professional, has been a significant shift. For instance, many face-to-face meetings have been replaced by video conferences. My family and I have become more adept at using platforms like Google Meet and Zoom to attend classes and conduct meetings. Online shopping has also become a staple, with more purchases being made virtually rather than in physical stores.
Stability in the Face of Lockdown
My profession, that of a police officer, remained largely unchanged during the lockdown. Routine duties and responsibilities persisted, and even increased due to heightened public health measures and enforcement efforts. The police remained on the frontlines, ensuring safety and order during this unprecedented time.
Reflections on a Better Post-Lockdown Life
After lockdown, life has improved in many ways. I now have more time to spend with family, explore new interests, and work on my physical and mental well-being. Toxic behaviors and habits from my routine have been removed. With more time and fewer distractions, I have been able to focus on personal development and strive to be the best version of myself.
These experiences create a rich tapestry of personal growth and adaptation, showing that even in the face of adversity, there are opportunities for self-discovery and improvement.
