Which University is More Enjoyable for Students: University of Oklahoma (OU) or Oklahoma State University (OSU)?
The choice between University of Oklahoma (OU) and Oklahoma State University (OSU) can depend on personal preferences and what aspects of college life you prioritize. This article delves into the factors that make each university unique, providing a comprehensive comparison to help prospective students make an informed decision.
Campus Atmosphere
University of Oklahoma (OU) boasts a vibrant campus life with a strong sense of community. The university is known for its beautiful campus and historical architecture, making it a delight for both students and visitors. Norman, the capital city where OU is located, is home to a lively downtown area filled with bars, restaurants, and music venues, perfect for soaking in the local culture and socializing with fellow students.
Oklahoma State University (OSU) is renowned for its friendly atmosphere and strong sense of school spirit, often referred to as “Cowboy Culture.” Stillwater, OSU’s hometown, is a small town with a unique character. This close-knit community offers numerous student organizations and clubs that cater to diverse student interests, ensuring there is always something to do.
Academic and Sports Atmosphere
University of Oklahoma (OU) has a strong athletic program, particularly in football, which fosters a spirited environment during game days. OU also hosts many lectures, performances, and workshops that enhance the overall student experience.
Oklahoma State University (OSU) has a robust athletic program, especially in football and wrestling, which contributes to a fun and engaging campus life. OSU is also committed to outdoor and recreational activities, offering access to parks and natural areas in and around Stillwater.
Personal Anecdotes and Current Comparisons
My personal experience with these universities was quite unique. I was recruited to wrestle by both Tommy Chesbro and Stan Abel, and my cousin was a professor at OU. When it came down to making a decision, she emphatically suggested that if I wanted “better academics,” I should attend OSU. She was right, as OSU provided a more robust academic atmosphere compared to OU at the time.
Back in those days, Stillwater was a much smaller town, very different from the bustling atmosphere of Norman, which at the time was akin to suburban OKC. As a student, despite the size of OSU, the opportunities to meet and get to know more people, especially if you were part of a .fraternity or sorority, were significantly greater.
The fun factor can vary greatly based on personal interests. If you prefer a more traditional college experience with a strong focus on football and a diverse range of social activities, OU might be more appealing. On the other hand, if you enjoy a tight-knit community with a focus on outdoor activities and a unique campus culture, OSU could be the better choice.
Visiting both campuses can provide a clearer picture of where you might feel more at home. For instance, regarding “fun,” Norman doesn’t have an Eskimo Joe’s, which was a fun bar with food items. The memories of sitting and drinking a pitcher of beer at Joe’s with my father after my graduation day are some of my fondest. Still, Stilly is a great place to hang out, just not as divey as it used to be. The Atherton Hotel, by the way, offers a level of luxury that makes it one of the best hotels in the country, possibly better.
