Optimizing High School Choices for Academic and Future Success

Looking back at my high school days, I often wish I had chosen my classes differently. If you could go back and change the classes you took in high school, what would you change? Reflecting on my own experiences, I've learned that choosing the right courses is crucial for academic success and future career preparation.

My High School Experience:

I felt compelled to avoid shop class woodworking, as it was not aligned with my interests and skills. I also regret not taking more rigorous courses. In those days, I might have felt that a course with a full unit was worth my time, but hindsight is 20/20. I took a 'survival home ec' course, which taught basic skills like sewing and cooking, but I still struggle with these tasks today. There's no shame in realizing you need to improve these skills, but it's often better to learn them during high school.

Looking back, I wish I had studied harder. The principal's permission was required for the classes I took, and he said that there were no half-unit classes. My response was simple: if a class wasn't worth a full unit, it wasn't worth my time. I took all the math, science, and shop classes I could, even if it meant taking 19 units to graduate. This was a considerable effort, showing my dedication to academics.

Other students often study just enough to pass a class. But my approach was different; I studied to understand the subject thoroughly and often engaged in more in-depth reading. It's vital to retain the knowledge you gain in school, as it forms the foundation for future endeavors.

Before school as a junior, I took flying lessons, which helped me understand the aviation section of my science class better. This example illustrates the importance of cross-disciplinary learning and how it can enhance your understanding of various subjects.

Contrast with Korean Education System:

In Korea, the education system is more rigid, with a focus on meeting requirements rather than choosing selected courses. However, it still emphasizes the importance of hard work and dedication. Being distracted in high school can significantly impact your college chances.

Advice for Future High School Students:

Focus on studying harder than you did in the past. Choose a variety of subjects that interest you, while also considering practical skills. Some of the courses I wish I had chosen include:

Accounting: I learned bookkeeping through Pitman’s secretarial training, which has served me well for over 30 years. If I had taken actual accounting, it could have significantly enhanced my legal qualifications and work as a lawyer. Music: Learning to play an instrument could provide a fun outlet and even lead to gig opportunities in the future. Physics, Calculus, and Graphic Design: These subjects would provide a strong foundation for various career paths. Spanish or French: Knowledge of a second language can open up international opportunities. Coding or Technology: Learning coding or technology can equip you with valuable skills for the modern job market. Shakespeare or Theatre: These subjects can improve your communication and analytical skills.

High school is a crucial period to explore various fields and learn as much as you can. Many students underestimate the importance of this time until they graduate and enter the workforce. It's never too late to make the most of each class you take.

Reflecting on the past can be bittersweet. I often wish I had taken different courses to better prepare for my future. By considering these options and taking the time to explore a variety of subjects, you can ensure a more fulfilled and successful academic journey.
