Reflections on Attending the University of Hawaii: A Personal Journey

The Positive Side of UH Manoa

Worth the Experience

My time at the University of Hawaii Manoa was undeniably one of my best decisions. Despite having two bachelor's degrees from my home state school, I struggled to find employment closer than Texas, applying to over 50 relevant positions on Oahu for over 8 months. This experience was even more poignant when I learned that my mom had intended for me to attend Berkeley, a school where I might've easily secured a job in my field with a degree. However, I am VERY GRATEFUL for the lessons and friendships I gained during my time at UH Manoa, where I met the most interesting people, both those who were academically gifted and those who weren't, but from whom I learned to be tolerant, open-minded, and understanding.

Fellow "Students" and Professors

I still keep in touch with fellow students and faculty like John Hayakawa, who graduated from U of H Manoa in 1978, emphasizing the long-lasting impact and connections formed during the academic journey. While commuting was the norm, living in dorms wasn't, and I didn't form new friendships in that environment. Nonetheless, if you are outgoing, making friends should be no obstacle.

Academic Excellence

A challenge to my attendance at UH Manoa is unwarranted. Academically, UH Manoa is renowned for its excellent professors. The caliber of the teaching staff is high, and I enjoyed most of the classes I took. Whether academically driven or curious about Hawaii's unique culture and lifestyle, U of H Manoa offers a solid education.

Work Expectations and Social Life

The work expectations at UH Manoa are not rigorous, making it easier to achieve good grades. Interestingly, the campus is home to some of the most beautiful women in the country, which might be appealing if that's of interest to you. However, it's worth noting that it's not a "party school." The culture in Hawaii is distinctly different from the mainland, with a more reserved demeanor, so it's important to adapt.

Alternative Educational Paths

For those who prefer not to attend UH Manoa, there are alternative educational options. Kapiolani Community College could be a great choice if you're looking for a more affordable or convenient education within Hawaii. UH Manoa is not the best fit for everyone, especially those looking for a more challenging academic environment and rigorous work expectations. It's a place suited for those who are open-minded and adaptable to a different lifestyle.

In conclusion, while my experience at the University of Hawaii may not align with the expectations of everyone, it was a pivotal period in my life that shaped who I am today. The lessons learned and the connections made have been invaluable, and I remain grateful for the time I spent there.
