Reflections on Life After High School Education

As someone who has undergone the transition from high school to the adult world, I have had numerous revelations. These experiences have ranged from the practical, like learning how to manage people, row a rowing shell, or play the saxophone, to the more profound, such as understanding the value of different skills and the challenges of adult life.

In retrospect, high school education, while valuable, did not adequately prepare me for the real world. The environment in high school is a microcosm of childhood, focusing on sports, performing arts, and stunts, which rarely translate into meaningful adult accomplishments. The social hierarchy and caste system that dominate high school carry very little weight in adulthood. Even those who excel through athletics or performing arts often find that their talents yield little recognition beyond their academic years.

For example, one of our football stars became a notable figure in Canadian football, including representing Canada in the 1984 Olympics. However, post-graduation, his career trajectory took a different turn. He briefly continued in the Canadian Football League before eventually shifting to the real estate and rental car industries. Another star, despite initial promise, faded into obscurity by the age of sixty, showing no significant advancement in his career or life.

It's important to recognize that the lessons and skills learned in high school are undoubtedly valuable. Great teachers and mentors can make a significant difference. These foundational skills can serve us well throughout our lives, but the way we apply them beyond the classroom is what truly matters. Instead of focusing on what we were recognized for in high school, we should aim to build on the skills we acquired to ensure our best years are ahead of us, not behind us.

To succeed in the adult world, one must prioritize enduring skills and experiences. These include the ability to write effectively, understand and navigate diverse professional environments, and develop critical life skills such as leadership, negotiation, and emotional intelligence. By focusing on these aspects, we can ensure a more fulfilling and successful adulthood.
