Reflections on My Best Students: How They Ended Up in Life

I’ve been fortunate enough to have a variety of outstanding students over the years, but the journey of each one has been incredibly unique. It's fascinating to see how their paths have taken them, often far beyond anything I could have imagined. Here are some insights into a handful of my most accomplished students and where they are today.

The Academic All-Stars

Three of my students were valedictorians or earned other high honors. One of these achieved a full scholarship to a prestigious university and now holds a distinguished position in Washington. Another embraced a creative path, becoming a musician and celebrated the release of his first CD. Yet another found success in marketing after becoming the drum sergeant in a fantastic pipe band. Perhaps most remarkably, a student who was illiterate in eighth grade not only learned to read and write but also found a fulfilling career as a heavy equipment operator in an open pit copper mine. These stories encapsulate the diverse ways in which my students have excelled and shaped their futures.

Challenges and Triumphs

These successes are in stark contrast to the challenges many face. As an English and writing professor, I often observe students over a single semester, rarely in their primary field of study. However, there are a few standout individuals whose stories stand out to me.

A Remarkable Transformation

One student was exceptionally gifted at engineering but deeply unhappy. This student left the engineering program and was disowned by his family for daring to study medicine instead. He persisted and currently completes his residency, positioning himself as a potential medical doctor, though I hope that he never realizes this need. His determination and courage are truly inspiring.

Hard Work and Determination

Another student, far from the best in academic terms, demonstrated tremendous work ethic. This young man worked two jobs to put himself through school, overcoming homelessness. Graduating, he secured a job in corporate IT for a multinational oil company. Today, he is engaged, buying a house, and staying active with weekend sports. His story highlights the power of hard work and perseverance.

Maturity and Resilience

A particularly mature and resilient student stood out. She was married and expecting her first child while in my class, a fact I was unaware of until after she had completed the term. She worked on her 2-year college diploma, transferred to university, and obtained both a degree and a CMA. Currently, she's pursuing an MBA. This student, who was functionally illiterate when she finished high school, has demonstrated remarkable growth through sheer determination.

Conclusion

These stories reflect the wide range of paths my students have taken. Each journey is a testament to the power of education, perseverance, and the determination to achieve one's goals. While it is difficult to rank students, it is clear that they each bring unique perspectives and life experiences that make their successes even more remarkable.
