Reflections on Studying at ISM Dhanbad: A Mixed Experience
Joining the Indian School of Mines and Applied Geology (now known as ISM) in Dhanbad in 1960 was undoubtedly a thrilling academic journey. However, my experience at ISM Dhanbad was not consistently positive, especially as I progressed from a student to a faculty member.
Positive Aspects: The Beginning
My early years at ISM Dhanbad were filled with joy and academic satisfaction. The culinary experience was top-notch, and the food in the mess was far superior to what I had experienced at another prestigious institution, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Initially, as a postgraduate (PG) student, I thrived in the PG hostel, where better provisions meant more variety and quality in my meals. Even though the food at IIT was also excellent, the PG hostel's dining options were more accommodating and satisfying.
Negative Aspects: The Later Years
My initial love for ISM Dhanbad slowly transformed into disappointment and disillusionment as I progressed in my academic and professional journey. In 1984, when I began my tenure as a faculty member, the institution had visibly changed. The most noticeable shift was in the quality of food; the days of tasting delicious meals were over. Moreover, the freedom students were granted became a matter of concern for me.
Lack of Strictness and Increased Misconduct
After class hours, there was no supervision or accountability among students. This change in behavior raised serious ethical and security concerns. As I ascended to the position of a faculty member, I felt the responsibility to address these issues. It was imperative that strict rules and regulations were put in place to ensure students' safety and upholding academic integrity. I colluded with the administration and fellow faculty members to enforce the rule that students must return to their hostels well before the library closes each night. This restriction was not only due to personal convenience but also to mitigate the growing problems of alcohol consumption and drug addiction among students.
Conclusion: A Gravity of Academic Responsibilities
Although there were challenging periods during my time at ISM Dhanbad, it is important to acknowledge the positive experiences as well. Studying hard for exams and completing assignments are fundamental aspects of one's academic journey and are generally viewed positively. However, my experiences also highlight the complexities of student life and the responsibilities that educators bear to create a nurturing yet disciplined academic environment.
