Since the pandemic, I have lost a significant amount of weight by making some simple and sustainable lifestyle changes. The sacrifices I have made might seem deep on the surface, but upon closer inspection, they aren't as profound as one would initially think. Over time, these small changes have led to substantial and lasting health benefits.

Shifting Habits for Better Health

Sugary Drinks were the first casualty of my journey towards a healthier lifestyle. They are often referred to as the "low hanging fruit" because the benefits of giving them up are immediate and noticeable. Instead of relying on sugary sodas, sugary coffee drinks, and energy drinks, I switched to tea or water. Occasionally, a diet drink is acceptable. I found that I didn't miss the sugary drinks as much as I anticipated.

Portion Control

Large portions were another habit I bid farewell to. Dining and feeling full were synonymous for me, but the key is to avoid finishing the entire plate. Simple solutions such as doggy-bagging leftovers or simply not overindulging can make a big difference. It's a shift in mindset rather than a drastic change in behavior.

Snacking Responsibly

My wife and I used to frequent convenience stores to indulge in snacks. Oreo cookies, Fig Newtons, and bags of potato chips became a regular treat. However, the reality is that these snacks can be replaced with healthier alternatives or simply consumed in moderation. We now share desserts and split them into smaller portions. This ensures we enjoy our treats without overindulging.

Making Room for Change

Money and time were additional sacrifices. The money I saved was primarily from purchasing new clothes after losing weight. I found myself shopping at thrift stores, which meant I still looked great without spending a fortune. In terms of time, investing in gym workouts allowed me to listen to music and podcasts, making the process enjoyable instead of tedious.

Overcoming Psychological Hurdles

A more profound sacrifice was giving up the scornful stares and reactions from others when I was overweight. People either looked down upon me or completely ignored me. However, as I began to lose weight and take better care of myself, these looks started to fade. The psychological impact was real, and it made the journey even more challenging but rewarding.

Quitting Smoking

One of the most significant sacrifices I made was giving up cigarettes. I started smoking at 16 and decided to quit at 22 when I realized smoking was detrimental to my cardiovascular health. Taking this decision seriously, I made it a point to stay smoke-free. Quitting is indeed tough, especially for those with a similar background like my mother and mother-in-law, who smoked until they could barely hold a cigarette. Every day I didn't smoke made it easier to quit.

While these sacrifices might seem daunting at first, they are indeed manageable when looked at through the lens of sustained, small changes. Over time, these modifications can lead to profound and lasting health benefits. It's a journey that requires patience, commitment, and a willingness to adapt to new habits.
