School Discipline: A Retrospective

School Discipline: A Retrospective

School discipline has long been a topic of discussion among educators, parents, and students. One form of discipline that has been both feared and remembered vividly is paddling. The memories of getting paddled in school can still be quite vivid, as if it happened only yesterday.

The Sting of Paddling

From personal recollections, the memory of getting paddled in school is one that lingers on. For instance, Mr. Brownrig’s paddle inflicted pain not just in the moment, but it was something that haunted you every time you sat down on that hard, cold school desk for days afterward. Such discipline left a lasting impression, making students more mindful of their actions and the rules they were supposed to follow.

However, not everyone had the same experience. Some individuals like the author never faced the prospect of being paddled. Growing up in a Jesuit high school, the form of discipline was more hands-on; while paddles were not used, the faculty employed their fists to administer corporal punishment. During such moments, a student’s respect for authority was tested to the limit, as even students were seen being thrown down stairs for disrespecting a teacher. Unfortunately, some of the stricter rules were enforced by ex-Notre Dame football players, who did not take any chances with rule-breaking behavior.

The Absence of Paddling

Some schools have managed to avoid using physical punishment. The author never had to endure a paddle or a spanking in their time at school. Life at the school had a different approach; instead of paddles, students received a spanking without their PE plimsolls. This method was employed for minor infractions and was effective in deterring bad behavior. Despite the absence of paddles, the rules were strictly enforced and respect for authority was crucial.

For those who experienced paddling, the memory remained vivid, no matter how minor the infraction might have been. The pain, the humiliation, and the sometimes fear of such punishment reinforced the importance of adhering to school rules. While the discipline was severe, it also served as a reminder of the value of respect and responsibility. Such lessons stayed with individuals long after their school days were over.

No matter the method of discipline, the goal is clear: to instill a sense of respect and responsibility amongst students. It is a delicate balance between ensuring compliance and respecting the dignity of students. As the memories of those formative years fade, the communities and schools continue to evolve, striving to find the best ways to educate and discipline.
