Self-Reflection: A Teacher's Impact and Identity in Front of the Principal

As a professional educator, it is not uncommon to stand in front of one's principal and be asked to describe oneself. This could be part of an annual evaluation process, an informal conversation, or a more formal review. In such settings, how would I, as a teacher, describe myself?

Effective, Efficient, and Memorable

When reflecting on my role and identity as a teacher, I would emphasize qualities such as efficiency, effectiveness, and memorability. These traits are not only important for maintaining high standards in the classroom but also in establishing a positive reputation among students, colleagues, and the administration. An effective and efficient teacher is one who can manage time wisely, cover the curriculum thoroughly, and ensure that each lesson is meaningful and engaging for the students.

Being memorable goes beyond just delivering quality lessons; it involves creating a lasting impact on the lives of students. When I reflect on my teaching journey and the various evaluations I have received, the instances where my impact has resonated the most are those where I have not only taught academic content but also genuinely connected with my students on a personal level. Having maintained connections with many of my former students through high school, college, and beyond, such enduring relationships underline the importance of creating a positive and supportive learning environment.

My mother always said, "the proof is in the pudding." For teachers, those special recollections and enduring connections indeed serve as the tangible markers of our hard work and commitment. They are the 'pudding' that reveals the real value and impact of our teaching.

Reflecting on a famous quote, "God couldn't be everywhere, so He created __________," I would say, "teachers." This reflects the idea that while teachers cannot be everywhere physically, they serve as the essential presence in classrooms, guiding and nurturing young minds. Teachers act as the bridge between knowledge and understanding, and their presence is crucial for the development of students not only academically but also personally.
