Shaping the Ideal School Education System: Moving Beyond Current Norms
The current education system, often following government policies revised in 2020, is still evolving and improving. It is essential to critically evaluate and adapt our educational approaches to better meet the needs of students and prepare them for the future.
Improving the Teaching of Core Languages and Grammar
One of the critical areas for improvement in the education system is the teaching of the English language. It is essential to teach the grammar of the native languages well so that students can correlate the grammatical constructs with English. Since we naturally do not think about the grammar when speaking our native language, we must get the opinions and advice of experts such as R.Ponnambalam to guide us in this process.
Educating Through Multisensory Methods
Another essential change is in the teaching of reading. Instead of introducing reading after mastering spoken language, we should teach reading at the same time. This approach helps the child learn to listen and read simultaneously. Introducing the alphabet and its sounds only after they understand the meaning of the words they see supports a more holistic learning experience.
Making STEM Education Accessible and Encouraging
STEM subjects, which often intimidate students, require a shift in focus. We should prioritize arithmetic over mathematics in these fields. Accurate estimation, rather than complex calculations, should replace automated arithmetic. The goal of estimation is to be within 5% of the correct answer, a goal that is less complex yet more practical.
Beyond Standardized Testing: Fostering a Comprehensive Learning Environment
The current system often relies heavily on standardized testing, which is expensive and may not represent the full ability and potential of students. We need to find ways to assess students more meaningfully and ensure that our education system is not solely about producing exam-takers but personalized lifelong learners.
Promoting a Love of Learning and Diverse Curriculum
If I could reshape schools, my top priority would be to foster a love of learning over standardized tests. I would weave real-world skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking into every subject. Empowering teachers with the resources and tools they need is essential for personalizing learning for diverse needs.
A flexible curriculum that embraces interdisciplinary projects and building a strong support network for both students and teachers can create a system that celebrates individual strengths and cultivates lifelong learners. This system should prioritize mental health support, providing a holistic approach that addresses the well-being of students and teachers alike.
By moving beyond the current norms and focusing on personalized learning, critical thinking, and mental health support, we can create an education system that truly prepares students for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
