Should I Take Yearbook at My School?

Deciding whether to take a yearbook class can depend on several factors. Here are some points to consider:

Pros:

Skills Development: You'll learn valuable skills in photography, writing, design, and editing. Creativity: It's a great outlet for creativity, allowing you to express your ideas and style. Teamwork: You'll work with a team, which can enhance your collaboration and communication skills. Memories: You'll contribute to capturing and preserving memories for your classmates, which can be quite fulfilling. Portfolio Building: If you're interested in a career in journalism, media, or graphic design, this can be a strong addition to your portfolio.

Cons:

Time Commitment: Yearbook can be time-consuming, especially as deadlines approach. Pressure: There may be pressure to meet deadlines and produce high-quality work. Interest Level: If you're not passionate about photography or writing, it might not be enjoyable.

Considerations:

Your Interests: Do you enjoy writing, photography, or graphic design? Workload: Consider your current course load and extracurricular activities. Future Plans: Think about how this class might fit into your future academic or career goals.

If You're Interested in It:

Yearbook is heavily centered around journalism, media creation, and photography. If any of these things sound cool to you, take the course!

Personal Experience

Joining the yearbook staff in the 9th grade and continuing all the way through college has been a rewarding experience. Being on the yearbook staff was a paid position in college, which was a lot better than flipping burgers in my opinion. Plus, I was able to attend many fun events as a staff photographer.

I learned a very wide variety of skills that paved the way for my career in marketing and graphic design. While there are certainly technical skills to be gained by joining the yearbook staff, the leadership, teamwork, and stick-to-itiveness you will learn will serve you well for life.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, taking a yearbook class can be a fantastic choice if you're interested in the skills and experiences it offers. Whether you're a photography or writing enthusiast, or just looking to add a unique experience to your academic career, it's definitely worth considering.
