Struggles with Learning and the Ethics of Cheating in Exams
Are you among those who have cheated in an exam? I can confidently say that I have not cheated in any exams in my life, choosing to face the consequences of my actions rather than resorting to unfair means. However, my journey with exams has not always been straightforward, and my experiences have led me to reflect on the ethics of cheating and the challenges of learning in a new language.
Academic Integrity and Personal Principles
Despite occasionally lacking in certain subjects, I have always maintained a strong stance against cheating. I firmly believe that academic success should be based on genuine knowledge and hard work. My failures in many exams, even when I had the opportunity to cheat, were often a result of my struggle with studying, rather than a lack of intent to succeed. My experiences have taught me the importance of personal integrity and the value of striving for true success.
Navigating Languages and Cheating in the US
At the age of 13, I immigrated to the United States, which marked the beginning of my academic journey here. I faced numerous challenges, particularly with languages, as I learned to navigate the complexities of English, Ukrainian, Russian, and eventually even Spanish. My grasp of English vocabulary and grammar took time to develop, which made studying challenging. In subjects where new vocabulary and concepts were frequent, such as AP Government, I found myself cheating more often. While I do not regret the times I cheated, I deeply regret not becoming proficient enough in English.
Mathematics: A Consistent Area of Strength
In contrast to my struggles with languages, mathematics has been a consistent area of strength for me. Since I was young, I developed a natural aptitude for math, finding it both interesting and rewarding. I never resorted to cheating in math classes, as I was confident in my abilities and found it fulfilling to demonstrate my competence. My interpersonal love for math and a deep desire to excel in this subject have kept me from the temptation to cheat in my algebra classes.
Empathy and Helping Others
While I do not support cheating in principle, I have helped others in more specific ways, such as assisting students with cheating in English classes when I was a sophomore. I chose to sit next to one of my classmates and write the answers on the bottom of my paper. I did this not out of personal enjoyment of cheating, but because I empathized with the difficulties they faced, especially when their parents did not understand the language. My actions were driven by a desire to help my classmates achieve the grades they believed were expected of them.
Lessons Learned and Future Plans
Through the highs and lows of my academic journey, I have learned valuable lessons about the importance of integrity, perseverance, and empathy. Moving forward, I am determined to take a more disciplined approach to my studies, focusing on hard work and dedication. I believe that by making concerted efforts to improve my language skills and maintain my academic integrity, I can achieve my goals and live up to my full potential. I am committed to avoiding cheating and finding alternative methods to support my fellow students without compromising my own principles.
