I pursued an undergraduate degree in European Studies but later transitioned to my Master's in Systems Management with a specialization in Information Systems Management. Despite my seemingly unrelated educational pathway, I was able to excel in my academic pursuits and lay the groundwork for a PhD in Computer Science. Although I did not complete the degree, my journey offers insights and encouragement for those considering a similar path.
Essential Skills and Capabilities
The key to success in a PhD program in Computer Science, especially for those with a background outside the field, is the ability to grasp the mathematical concepts necessary for the curriculum. Many programs do not require advanced mathematical knowledge beyond basic statistics. However, be prepared to tackle multivariate statistical analysis if your research involves more complex data sets. Remember, the ability to use formulas and analyze data is crucial, regardless of whether you can derive them.
When I made the transition, I did not have a background in multivariate calculus, but I was well-versed in the application of formulas.
