TU Delft: A Well-Rounded MSc in Aerospace Engineering

My background is a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering from India, and I started my Masters in Power and Propulsion at TU Delft in September 2018. Divided Academic Terms
A notable difference when you join TU Delft is the academic structure, which is divided into quarters instead of semesters. This means students need to stay constantly engaged throughout the year to perform well in exams. In contrast, in India, the preparation period is just about 1.5 to 2 weeks before exams, often leading to relatively easy pass marks. At TU Delft, the pressure is higher, with a passing grade of 60 or above, which often demands applying knowledge practically rather than just memorizing formulas.
Challenging but Rewarding Curriculum
Initially, the Power and Propulsion program at TU Delft involves a lot of theoretical concepts like aerodynamics and engine thermodynamics. As the academic year progresses from September to January, students get more freedom to choose elective courses. I took a lot of mechanical engineering subjects as electives, which added a personal touch to my learning journey. In the later half of the year, from February to June, the coursework shifts to a more application-based approach, with a focus on hands-on projects to test and apply the concepts learned.
Flexible Academic Schedule
TU Delft offers a high degree of flexibility in pacing one's studies. Courses can be rescheduled for the next academic year if you haven't finished them within the current schedule. This is something that stood out to me as a non-European student, as I needed to adapt to a different academic calendar and workload distribution. The program encourages students to take charge of their academic journey, promoting a balanced approach to learning and personal growth.
High-Quality Course Content and Assignments
Another hallmark of the program at TU Delft is the rigor of the course content and assignments. Each assignment requires critical thinking rather than rote learning. It took me some time to adapt to this approach, as it demanded more time and effort, but the end result was a more profound understanding of aerospace engineering concepts.
