The Allure of a Librarian’s Calling

For many, the idea of being a librarian may evoke images of stacks of books, quiet reading nooks, and a certain sense of serenity. However, the journey and the joy it brings are much more profound. My personal experience encapsulates this journey, as I discovered the profound and multifaceted appeal of a career in librarianship.

Discovering a Purpose

After encountering some career setbacks, including a mismatched major in college and subsequent unsatisfying employment, I found a lifeline in the local public library. This decision was not just a job; it was a step towards finding my true vocation. A chance encounter during a cold January visit to the city revealed opportunities that resonated with my aspirations. Two interviews later, I was hired as a part-time library page, marking the beginning of my professional journey in librarianship.

Education and Commitment

The journey was not without obstacles and challenges. My supervisor suggested pursuing a Master of Library Science (MLS) degree, which led to a part-time job at my alma mater. This experience allowed me to test the waters before making a full commitment to further education. Eventually, with commitment and perseverance, I completed the MLS and transitioned into an Adult Services Librarian role.
