The Black American Experience in Europe: Reflections and Recollections

Living abroad as a Black American in Europe has been a unique and sometimes bittersweet journey. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to explore numerous cities and cultures, each offering its own set of experiences and insights. My story is a blend of the delightful and the challenging, with a special emphasis on my time in Mainz, Germany, and my extended stay in Italy.

Europe Through a Black American Lens

Early Experiences in Mainz, Germany (1985-1986): My first visit to Mainz in 1985 marked the beginning of a series of memories both cherished and painful. Although I had a great experience in Europe overall, one incident during my first weekend in Mainz stands out as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by Black Americans in Germany.

During my stay, I encountered a deeply upsetting experience that continues to provoke dreams and nightmares every new moon. It was a painful reminder of the emotional distress such incidents can cause. Despite the gravity of the experience, I was fortunate to have the means to overlook it, thanks to the West German Marks I received. This incident, while traumatic, was not a defining one in my overall journey through Europe.

Exploring European Capitals and Beyond

Paris, London, Barcelona, and Brussels: My journey through Europe soon extended to other iconic cities, with visits to Paris, London, Barcelona, and Brussels. These experiences not only broadened my horizons but also allowed me to immerse myself in the diverse histories and cultures of Europe. Each city offered a unique history, art, and architecture that left an indelible mark on my memories.

Wiesbaden and Frankfurt, Germany (1986-1988): I moved to Wiesbaden and Frankfurt, where I continued to explore my German counterparts and refine my German language skills. These years also provided me with the chance to explore nearby countries like Italy and Switzerland, deepening my cultural understanding and appreciation.

Stuttgart and the Gulf War (1988-1993): My tenure in Stuttgart was both challenging and enlightening. While the city itself offered wonderful experiences, the Gulf War intervention added a layer of international significance to my stay. This period saw me traveling to Italy, Switzerland, and Greece, further enriching my European journey.

Africa and Saudi Arabia (1990-1993): A significant part of my time in Stuttgart was spent in Africa, where I discovered a rich and diverse history. My travels to countries like Egypt, Israel, and Saudi Arabia provided a different perspective on the world and its multifaceted history.

Italy: A Life-Changing Move

Rome and Florence (2002-2008): My journey in Europe culminated in my six-year stay in Italy, occupying homes in Rome and Florence. This period was filled with unforgettable moments, from exploring the art and architecture to meeting other Europeans and appreciating their deep knowledge of global and American history.

Racism in Japan: It is worth noting that my experiences with racism were most pronounced during my time in Japan. The stark contrast between Japan and Europe underscored the different socio-cultural contexts in which these experiences unfold.

Living in Rome and Florence: Intercultural interactions in Italy were often positive, with people initially mistaking me for Brazilian. This was a delightful misunderstanding that eventually led to genuine conversations and connections. My Italian boyfriend, in particular, added a layer of warmth and humor to these interactions.

Attitudes and Perceptions: My time in Italy also marked a period of self-discovery, where I gained a new perspective on the world. Unlike my initial assumptions, Italy and Italian people, in general, were more knowledgeable and less provincial than I had expected. This was a humbling realization and one that has stayed with me.

Reflections and Future Plans: Overall, my experiences in Europe have been a blend of sadness and joy, offering invaluable lessons and memories. The warmth, hospitality, and friendship I found in countries like Italy have moved me deeply, leading me to consider retiring there. The cultural richness and historical depth of Europe continue to inspire and captivate me, making it a place I will always treasure.
