How Well Have You Been Received by Your Senior PG Residents?
PG (Post-Graduate) residents play a crucial role in the professional and personal development of junior doctors. Their behavior and relationship dynamics significantly impact the bond between seniors and juniors, shaping a supportive and enriching environment.
The Role of Junior Doctors in PG Residents' Interaction
Junior doctors, like myself, have the power to influence the PG residents' behavior. By consistently showing respect and professionalism, we create a positive atmosphere that fosters mutual understanding and trust. Some PG residents become lifelong friends, while others may be more critical. It's important to remember that the ultimate goal is to learn from each other and advance our careers together.
My First Posting in Community Medicine
My first posting in community medicine was an eye-opening experience. I did not interact much with PG residents, but I did have the opportunity to work closely with medical officers and doctors. My duties included monitoring pregnant women and conducting regular check-ups. Additionally, I learned how to administer vaccines and immunoglobulins from the nursing staff.
A Memorable Incident: A Tragic Delivery
One of the most interesting and challenging experiences was in the obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) department. A patient delivered a neonate with cyclopia, a rare condition where a baby is born with only one eye socket. Although this was a somber experience, it contributed to my broader medical knowledge and understanding.
The Excitement of Medicine Duty
My most memorable duty was in the medical ward. Being on emergency duty in the medical ward provided me with an intense and diverse exposure to the medical world. I encountered various challenging patients, including those with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), hyperemesis gravidarum (HE), poisoning, snake bites, and stroke.
A unique incident: A premature delivery
One of the most exciting and critical incidents I experienced was when a pregnant woman came to the medical ward with hypertension and delivered prematurely. My team and I had to manage the delivery without the help of OB/GYN residents. We had to perform cord clamping and other necessary tasks. This experience was nerve-wracking but incredibly rewarding.
Supportive PG Residents and Unspoken Rules
The most significant rule we follow in the medical ward is not a rule at all, but a source of warmth and encouragement. Our unit head provides us with money on every emergency day, and PG residents bring us dinner. This ritual helps us bond and shows that our hard work is recognized, even if it's just basic tasks like taking blood pressure and pulse.
A Special Birthday Celebrate
One of the sweetest moments was when a colleague's birthday was celebrated by the PG residents. Despite the busy and chaotic environment, they remembered and ordered a cake for her. This gesture not only made her feel special but also created a warm and supportive atmosphere.
Case Studies and Memories
While these are just a few examples, there are many more unforgettable moments. For instance, a patient who was cured of tuberculosis brought 1 kg of rasagullas. This act of gratitude, suggested by his PG seniors, was a touching gesture that highlighted the importance of recognizing the efforts of doctors.
Overall, the relationship between junior doctors and PG residents is critical for a fulfilling and successful medical career. Mutual respect, support, and simple gestures of care can make all the difference.
