The Impact of Seeking ‘Hooky’ on High School Academic Performance

Introduction to Seeking 'Hooky': A Personal Reflection

Did you ever play hooky when you were in high school? For many of us, the concept of 'hooky', or the act of skipping school for leisure rather than necessity, was a tempting escape from the rigors of academic life. In my case, I only sought hooky once or twice during high school. According to my friend, the primary allure was simply to avoid getting high, watch TV, or listen to music. Unfortunately, those brief forays into avoiding schoolwork quickly sank into boredom as I realized that my peers were present and focused on their studies.

The Value of Education and Overcoming Adversity

As the years passed, I came to understand the importance of education and found myself deeply committed to pursuing it. Growing up in a rural area in a poor state, my family's financial struggles made the dream of higher education seem like a distant fantasy. However, my determination to break the cycle of poverty and reach the goal of a professional career drove me to fight hard against those odds. As a result, I was awarded a full 4-year scholarship to Antioch College, enabling me to support myself and subsequently assist other family members.

Personal Experience with Seeking 'Hooky': A Cautionary Tale

One day, I sought hooky by claiming a pass to go home early for lunch. Not thinking it through, I had forgotten that my neighbor and the mother of my high school assistant principal lived nearby. My neighbor immediately noticed my car in the driveway and approached me, inquiring about my well-being. Her presence, and the fact that she knew my parents very well, made my attempt at avoiding school particularly futile. In the end, the reality of my actions was impossible to deny, and my cover had been blown.

The Complexity of Seeking 'Hooky': More Than Just Skating

Some people believe that playing hooky might be more of an inclination towards activities like hockey rather than hooky, given the challenges involved in the latter. However, for me, it was more about the simple enjoyment of leisure activities such as surfing, waterskiing, and playing racquetball, which were far more appealing than the daily challenges of school.

The Real Impact of 'Hooky': Academic Consequences and Ultimately Positive Outcomes

Despite my past attempts at seeking hooky, my academic performance suffered. In my senior year, I received D's and 2 Fs for my calculus scores, and an F on the final exam. Due to the teacher's desire to avoid confrontation, I was given a passing grade of D. This change occurred in 1975, yet two years later, I managed to graduate with an AA and a grade-point average of 3.2, which was respectable at the time. Four decades later, with a renewed drive to achieve my degree, I graduated with a GPA of 3.88. Four decades of lost potential hardly detracted from my ultimate success. I still fondly refer to myself as an 'old hooky boy' with a considerable degree of pride, given where it led me in the end.

Conclusion: Balancing Leisure and Academic Responsibility

While the desire for leisure and escaping from academic pressures may always be tempting, the long-term consequences of seeking hooky can have a lasting impact. However, with determination and a strong sense of purpose, even the perceived failures of the past can be turned into positive outcomes. My journey from seeking hooky to achieving academic success serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of balancing leisure and academic responsibility.
