The Leadership Lessons from ISRO's Crisis: A Team's Triumph and the Chief's Tears
During my Engineering final year project, we were in the final stages of testing our IoT project.[1] Just before the final submission, our microprocessor failed mysteriously. We employed various troubleshooting methods, but to no avail. Our team was both tense and broken, unable to submit the project on time.[2]
Leadership in Crises
Just like the ISRO Chief's moment of vulnerability, our team faced a daunting situation. When we reached out to our guide, he agreed to join us at a location 30km away from our college. Our final submission was at 11 AM. We knew the stakes were high and the possibility of failure was imminent. Despite facing such challenges, we managed to plan and execute a strategy that led to our project's success. Our trainer was late, but he effectively diagnosed and resolved the issue. This experience reinforced the importance of resilience and effective communication under dire circumstances.
The ISRO Crisis and the Chief's Tears
When I was refreshing ISRO's Twitter handle late into the night, I knew that something was amiss. The absence of updates was jarring, and when news channels were silent, I began to realize the gravity of the situation. There was a breaking down of the ISRO chief into tears; a moment that, for many Indians, felt deeply personal and heart-wrenching.[3] However, there were those who mocked the chief's vulnerability, suggesting a lack of credibility or a failure to manage the situation.[4]
Leadership and Emotional Intelligence
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's response to the crisis is a testament to effective leadership and emotional intelligence. When faced with uncertainty and crisis, leaders ought to remain calm and composed. In the case of the ISRO crisis, PM Modi's encouragement of the ISRO team demonstrated a commitment to the cause and an understanding of the emotional strain on his team.[5]
Conclusion
The ISRO crisis and the emotional response of its chief illustrate the human side of leadership. Vulnerability and tears do not diminish the effectiveness of a leader; rather, they highlight the importance of empathy and human connection. Leaders who can navigate crises with compassion and resilience set a powerful example for their teams and followers.[6]
