Traveling Abroad: Lessons Learned from Uncomfortable Situations
Traveling abroad can be an exhilarating and enriching experience, but it also comes with its fair share of uncomfortable situations. Over the years, I've encountered a variety of challenges that, while not always dangerous, certainly were inconvenient. In this article, we will explore some of the lessons I've learned from my travels in Germany and Spain, as well as my experiences in other parts of the world.
Germany and Spain: Uncomfortable Situations
One of my most memorable experiences occurred in Germany and Spain. In Germany, I found myself in a challenging situation where I had to hail a taxi but could not communicate the destination with the driver, who did not speak English and I did not speak German. Fortunately, I had a colleague's phone number who could help translate, and this taught me a valuable lesson: always have your destination printed out in the local language to avoid confusion.
In Spain, a less positive encounter happened in Barcelona when my husband was targeted by a pickpocket on the subway. Although we did not face any danger, his swift actions and presence of mind resulted in the pickpocket being apprehended by the police. From this experience, I learned the importance of keeping valuables and important documents hidden and close to your body.
Strategizing Safe Travel
Despite these close calls, my husband and I do not venture too far from the well-trodden tourist paths, even when exploring smaller towns that are rarely visited by tourists. One such town we visited was Caceres in Spain, known for its medieval buildings and festival ambiance. Despite the festive environment, we chose to stay sober and avoid excessive mingling with the locals to maintain a sense of safety.
Medical and Road Safety
Beyond these incidents, there have been other instances where safety played a crucial role. I have undergone medical procedures in Russia, including an appendectomy in Omsk. While not directly related to travel safety, this experience emphasized the importance of being prepared for any medical emergencies abroad.
Traveling by road can also present challenges, especially when driving on a side of the road that differs from what you are accustomed to. I have had instances where I forgot which side to drive on, which can be both inconvenient and potentially hazardous. This experience taught me to always be vigilant and attentive to the road rules, even in familiar cities.
High-Risk Destinations
Some destinations stand out more prominently when it comes to perceived danger. Countries like Egypt, Israel, and Jordan have made me feel that there could be life-threatening situations, especially because of the presence of military or police with machine guns at various locations such as airports, streets, and tourist resorts. The intense questioning and luggage searches encountered while traveling between these countries add another layer of discomfort and caution to the already challenging travel experience.
Despite these issues, my experiences have also allowed me to appreciate the beauty and culture of these places. Even with the added precautions, the memories of Medieval Caceres and other destinations remain pleasant, making the venture worthwhile.
Traveling safely involves a balance of preparation, awareness, and a bit of caution. Whether it's understanding local languages, managing valuables, being mindful of road rules, or being aware of potential high-risk areas, these lessons can help ensure a smoother and safer travel experience. Happy travels!
