Introduction
Engineers in the field of Electrical and Communication Engineering (ECE) often wonder about the placement packages they can expect, especially from renowned institutions like Amrita Coimbatore. The myth and reality around these packages can be quite misleading, especially when hyped numbers are bandied about. In this article, we will delve into the truth behind ECE placements at Amrita and explore factors affecting career progression over the years.
The Reality Behind Amrita Coimbatore's ECE Placements
Amrita College Yettimdaity is a prominent institute in Coimbatore, known for its engineering programs. Over the years, we have seen how placement packages have evolved. From 2012, the average package for ECE students was around Rs. 3.9 LPA (lakhs per annum). By 2016-2017, this had increased to Rs. 6.25 LPA, marking a significant improvement. By 2019-2020, the average package had further increased to Rs. 7.45 to Rs. 8.50 LPA.
However, the most impressive figure has been the highest placement package, which reached up to Rs. 35.30 LPA for students placed at companies like Google in 2019-2020. At the Amrita Yettimdaity campus, the highest placement package was Rs. 36 LPA with Amazon. These figures might explain where the inflated numbers in the title come from, but they certainly do not align with every student's experience.
Challenges and Realities of the Tech Industry
The tech industry is notorious for demanding long hours and high workloads. While some graduates start with packages as high as Rs. 5 to 6 LPA, many go on to earn in crores over the years. The high-package stories are typically outliers. This reality is captured in my own 10 years of experience within the tech industry. While some tech-savvy individuals with startups and MNCs earn spectacular packages, many run the risk of succumbing to health issues such as heart attacks and breathing problems due to overwork.
Engineering Quality and Career Expectations
Despite the impressive placement records and package sizes cited, it is critical to understand the quality and relevance of the education provided. Amrita, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Manipal, and SRM are often labeled as Tier-4 engineering institutions with minimal focus on campus placements. For these colleges to achieve Tier-1 status, they must enhance their placement facilities and industry collaboration programs.
Private engineering colleges, especially those touting fraudulent programs, fail to impart industry-relevant skills. This is because such colleges do not want to equip students with the skills necessary for wider employment opportunities, which would negatively impact traditional government-sourced jobs. The term 'ECE' in 2021 is outdated and should not be taught in Indian institutions, as the curriculum is outdated and producing graduates unprepared for modern industry demands.
Why Verifying Offers is Crucial
Lastly, while the average and highest placement figures are significant, these should not be taken at face value. Verification of individual offers and packages is essential. Many inflated claims about placement packages are mere fiction. Students must rely on concrete offer letters to gauge their true placement potential.
